Water has long had significant religious and psychic connotations. Note from christian mythology the 'water of life', the 'blood and water' that flowed from jesus's side, jesus walked on the water, and turned water to wine.
Carl Jung postulated in the early 20th century that water is a symbol of the unconscious, since so many of us have dreams where we are swimming under water, yet can still breathe. It's interesting to see science catching up.
