| No need to buy canning jars, get them free when you buy Classico spagetti sauces. A regular canning lid fits them perfectly. I always thought/used them as quarts, but after washing 15 or 20 of them today, I realized they are only 24 oz. jars. It's good to end up with something you can use in your hobby after a good meal. I use the plastic lids with a micron filter disk and a 1" hole drilled in them with a spade bit. Perfect size for good air exchange, they don't dry out. I also use 1 dry cup of hard winter wheat to 110 mls of water straight in the jars, (no presoak) and then into the PC. Saves time & effort on simmering/presoaking, but this isn't anything new, Stamets mentions this one. It also can invite trouble if your grain has a high endospore load or is old(I've not had any problems). Buy your grains at health food community stores, they usually stock grains that are fungicide free, VERY IMPORTANT! Print on glass when you succeed,it can be had for free at the large hardware superstores, just dig the scrap pieces out of the bin where they do cuts instore, tell the clerk you dug the glass out of their trash, and they usually give it to you for free. Build your own racks from PVC piping, cheap and easy to work with. You can build the mini greenhouses cheaper yourself. Cheap plastic sheeting can be bought at Wallyworld to cover them with. buy an impulse sealer if you ever see one on clearance somewhere, they are very handy for making your own bags, sealing baggies, or sealing seams on that homemade mini greenhouse. Build your own laminar flow hood, its not rocket science, I built one that works great for under 75 dollars, but I scrounged the squirrel cage blower motors. |
