A/B Spice Extraction

I'm doing an acid/base spice extraction. I've noticed that the older teks instruct you to bring the acidic solution down to pH 2, while others say pH 4. Does anyone know the reason for this? Was it determined that it was unnecessary to bring the pH down to 2; that pH 4 worked equally as well?

I've also heard several people mention that mimosa hostilis root bark is sufficiently acidic in itself that you can extract the spice out of the bark using only distilled water in your acid phase. Can anyone confirm this? Sadly, the person I heard this from directly is no longer a Mycotopiate, but another 'Topiate, cheech, also mentions it in this thread:
