ReRun, I made a syringe the other day when I was in a hurry that you could have recharged a printer cartridge with! No harm done, just a waste of spores.
The gauge of your needle isn't all that important as long as it will fit through the holes in the lid. Some are better for certain uses than others, you'll develop a preference if you have a selection to work with.
You'll get as many different answers about lids as you get replies. Some prefer polyfill, others tyvek, taped up holes, etc. I'll get a lot of arguments I'm sure, but I drill 4 small holes in the lids and fill them with silicone or RTV cement.
I use the same lids for everything, you can stick a sterile airport in one of the holes where needed.
Try to avoid innoculating with trich whereever possible...
