I use rain and snow as water sources.
Harvesting and collecting water is pretty neat - I find that it has a shelf life so use it quick
I don't know about the purity of the water but my plants have never seemed to mind. A pH tester might help with that decision. Water should be near 7.0 or really close thereabouts.
I don't use the water for indoor fungal cultivation. Containers harbor bacteria and other microbes.
Pre-packaged water (or tap water) is cleaner.
Outdoor projects however, LOVE rainwater.
I have used snow - as if there were a difference - but I was capitalizing on lower temperatures for a cold-fruiting woodlover project. Bacteria couldn't hope to get a foothold in those projects.
Experiment and go with what works.
