First off, I’m Mrs. Banzai, Bucky’s wife, and I don’t normally post things online in message boards. My Buckaroo read Demetra’s post to me, and I felt compelled to respond. I’m only responding to the poster, so don’t get your back up if I repeat any points already made.

Demetra, your response cheats you of a great community of people. My husband spends hours on this site, and he’s made friends here. Now, while my husband is up chatting online at 3:00 in the morning, porn is going to come up. My understanding is that you have to actually follow the threads to see the boobies. And maybe you’re one of those uptight chicks who makes her boyfriend pretend he doesn’t like porn, and now you’ve caught him looking. You’re possibly one of those crazy chicks who cuts their boyfriend off 6 months before the wedding because you want it to be “special”.

I take umbrage at your assertion that that thread of bare nekkid ladies was exploitation. My husband and I have been married a long time, and when he asked me if I would allow him to post my picture, I was initially shocked that he asked. Then I was very flattered, and since he’s anonymous here, there was no need to worry anyone who might know me would see them and know it was me. There’s a freedom in that. I like the fact that there’s a picture of me on the internet without my top on, and no one knows. The women who allowed this did it of their own free will. Bragging about their significant other. Not some one-night stand taken without the subject’s knowledge.
I don’t care that men on this sight might whack off to a picture of my boobs. It’s harmless. And it’s not porn. It just pictures of women’s tits.

Now there was a woman on the site for a long time, Freaky, who was very respected and loved. My husband and the other members of this site were friends with her. They didn’t just talk about mushrooms. When you are interested in a topic like this, you know it’s more than your brain that’s engaged. It’s also your heart and your soul. And I can promise you that if Freaky had ever posted her tits on this site, everyone would have made crude and complimentary comments and she would have been just as accepted and respected as when she’s got her top on, and she wouldn’t have been exploited by men. There is no subjugation.

And I’m sure you can find some place to discuss mushrooms. But as you’re in the field of science, you might consider the fact that it’s a predominantly male field, and you’d better get used to dealing with it in a better way than proselytizing. No one is willing to really pay attention to some chick blathering about the same crap we’ve been doing for eons. Be more creative about discussing your feelings on this topic. A sense of humor helps.
