I'm almost certain the pans will not be able to get through where it's almost an inch thick, and even 1/2 inch is a bit much I think. Around 1/4 inch is what is often recommended for pans. So I think it's a good idea to remove some from the thicker parts like you wrote above.
It will be interesting to see what kind of pans pop up. The giants or the tiny but potent ones!! :-)
