Hey there Im new to this forum and Im curently on my first grow. I made some Brown Rice Syrup Agar and hit it with B+ Spores and LC.It looks real fuzzy and not much rizamorph to it. But when I smelled one of them it did have a strong mushroom smell to it. Any input would help, Thank you

They look good for multi-spore. You will not be able to isolate. You will not always smell bacteria... Do not worry to much about rizho growth... the fuzzy stuff can put out just as much and sometimes I wonder if Rhizo actually = more productive or just more pretty. |

Ok Ill have to read up or that one. thanks Joe As for the BRS Agar, at first it was just something I found in my health food store while shopping for organic honey for a LC. So I did a LC with the BRS and it worked about the same as the honey... Then I was making some MEA Agar and just used the BRS in place of the Malt Extract. Side by side they grew about the same but the BRS agar was much more clear and clean looking then my MEA so I use it now. I also put a pinch of calcium carb in my BRS Agar... Also its the NOW brand BRS the other one they had is really foggy looking mine is about as clear as honey. Thanks for all the help / info ... still learning much here...

heres a pic of the brown rice syrup I used as for formula I used , it was one of the simple MEA ones like: 9 grams Agar Agar, 10 grams BRS, 500ml water + a little calcium Do you guys think the calcium carb powder really helps much?

ask in a different thread, off-topic ya know. --------------------------------------------------- i reckon that calcium carb is in there to help the syrup gel up, it's pretty common in MEA recipes. i'd use it if that's what the formula calls for. here's some other agar recipes- Mycotopia Web Archive: Agar-culture info |

Yea I did make a few BRS Agar cultures w/ out the calcium carb and they didnt seem to grow quite as well / fast. And no most of my Agar cultures have no discoloration to them, a few did come out with a orangeish slim on the surface I think its some kind of bacteria. Thats why I like my new BRS Agar SO MUCH its a light clear color unlike my MEA, easier to tell if they have a bacteria infection IMO.
