Great post, Flame on! Friction methods are very dependent on the elements cooperation, hi humidity and or rain without dry tinder is a big problem. another method: Pocket magnifier: keep one in your first aid kit, one in your sun visor, one in your wallet or pocketbook. I keep one handy (on my person) it is nice to have a good close up viewer when looking at specimens. Hopefully you have your clothes and or your wallet if you become stranded. They also work great if you smudge, or do incense... A large sheet magnifier, can boil water, sterilize and distill liquids and even heat rocks for warmth...in a pinch when fire wood is scarce. Most methods need some sunshine to keep things dry, if it is cloudy and rainy; well, I hope you have a lighter or matches for this doobie bro, or being out here in the wilderness is going to kinda blow till the boomers kic. -j-

Yeah Jose there a lot of factors come into play when using friction. Magnifiers are excellent to keep around. I have one in the car, in my wallet, and other odd places. Any other sugestions for making fires without matches or lighters is always welcome!!

Another way to make fire is to use a fire piston. This uses pressure to make fire and tribes all over the world who make blowguns use them. I guess they noticed the heat when hollowing out tubes for them. think of how a deisel engine works by using pressure to ignite the fuel. you place a bit of tinder inside and slap the piston down. The pressure creates enough heat to ignite the tinder. http://www.survivalschool.com/produc...re_Pistons.htm http://www.imagesco.com/science/fire-piston.html http://www.instructables.com/id/SZVSW0AFBSYRPSD/ Also, Not an ignition source but still a good way to start a fire is firestarters made from trash... Take dryer lint and fill all the pockets in a paper (not styrofoam) egg carton. next, make a double boiler and melt all your candle stubs. THE WAX MUST BE VERY VERY HOT TO POUR (if it is not hot enough it wont saturate all the way into the lint) Fill all the egg cups with the super hot wax let cool then cut the egg cups apart. thats all! One will even light wet wood in high wind. the egg cup burns up and the wax melts onto your wood while the lint acts as a wick. It is the easiest & safest portable way to start a fire i have ever seen.

Coolest I've seen was Les Stroud on Survivor Man, using an aluminum can and chocolate. He used the chocolate to polish the concave bottom and used that to magnify light as an ignition. It was so fly, I'll never forget it. Bow method is the only one I've had great success with. From a shoelace to a strip of your t-shirt, it's hard to beat IMHO.
