More likely you've been providing free electricity
TO the phone company.

Trace your interior phone wiring run. Somewhere
along the line you'll find a phone company
transformer plugged/wired into your electric circuit.

I unplugged mine.

Maybe in your house... I had to wire up a johnny-rigged hardwire phone during a power
outage last year, used my teeth to strip a wire and received an unpleasant zing
through my mouth... not like sucking a light socket, but there was certainly some power
there. BTW, if the phone company was wired into your house, and you disconnected
it.... how do you use the phone?

All phone lines have a constant flow of voltage, around 40-70 volts (up to 100 volts when it rings!), but you can't just plug stuff into it and expect it to work. You can really mess with your phone system by doing that

2. (1) 240ohm resistor
3. (1) 510ohm resistor
4. (1) LM317L Regulator
5. (1) KBP210 Bridge Rectifier
6. (2) Phone line cables

i believe the idea
isn't running stuff off the phone lines-
use a charger to charge a few deep cycle batteries to store power.
use power inverter to draw high wattages when needed.

I believe that the idea there is that if you pay extra for the same product but of a "Green" variety, the company will divert funds towards buying carbon-offset credits. There are quite a few retailers/service providers doing similar things recently, as far as I know.
