how to make wheels out of cedar

I was talking to my grandpa the other day,and he told me a interesting way that his grandfather made wheels out of cedar. They would cut a narrow piece off a log and burry it in the ground. after a year the white wood would rot out leaving the redwood leaving a perfect wagon wheel. i thought you guys and gals might like it.

i think it would be cool to see to but i lack cedar and land to bury it in. so if some one does it and post pics that would be kick ass.
