I tried to bumpfire a Bushmaster AR-15, but there is absolutely no recoil so it didn't work. Must have been the very effective AK-74 style muzzle brake. On the other hand, I've bump fired my buddy's Vepr AK-47. Top of the line, two stage trigger, sprays $15 worth of ammo in 2 seconds, and turns heads when we do that. ("Are those guys shootin machine guns?")

I like that string on the bolt trick, might try it on my Marlin .22. Looks like a Mini 14 in that pic. A friend tried to bumpfire his Mini 14, but the recoil was lacking a bit and was sporadic.

I would warn against doing it with pistols. You could easily shoot yourself or someone else. .223 mini 14s dont have much recoil at all, so surely a .22 is not going to bump fire.

Yeah, to bumpfire a 10/22 you gotta loosen the screws holding the receiver to the stock so the receiver slides back and forth on the stock. I tried to bumpfire my 40 cal Hi-Point pistol, but didn't work out.
