Cactus A/B Extraction – Yield Too Good?

A friend did a peruvian torch extraction using the Waylitjim tek with minor variations.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o>></o>>
100 grams of PT powder (reported 1 – 1.2 % alkaloid content) was extracted with 2 liters of 2.5 M NaOH and 20 oz toluene in a 1-gallon jug. Five pulls were done and each was salted with acid water (8 drops of 31 % HCL/ 12 oz water). All 5 of the approx 100 ml acid water extracts ( approx. 500 ml total) were evaporated as they were pulled in the same dish producing some nice crystals. The greenish evaporate was ground to a finer consistency and washed with acetone (using a lab filter instead of cotton ball so no hot water wash and re-crystalization was necessary ) producing a very pale green (almost white product). The end product had a salty taste and a ph of 7-8.
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o>></o>>
The guy has a pretty good lab technique but was kind of surprised by the yield from the 100-gram extract. He was expecting a yield of around 1 gram (i.e., 2 doses) from the 100 grams of PT powder but got 7.3 grams!
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o>></o>>
Is this a typical yield?

odds are strongly in favor of your friend having a ton of impurities in the final product.....if you can dose 14x with that pls let me know where you got the cactus material lol.

when swim did his cactus extract the end product was VERY bitter tasting. and he only got about 1% yield.
sounds like the guy made a bunch of nacl.

He (i.e., the guy) did expect some NaCL but not 6 grams! Any input on what could have gone wrong? Is it possible that the acidic water was too weak ( He used Waylitjim's recommendation of 8 drops (0.4ml) of 31.5% (10M) acid per 12 oz of water.)

PS - Some NaCL was added to the extraction vessel to break up an emulsion but it should have stayed with the cactus in the extraction vessel.

Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes?

My friend sent me a picture of his 7 + gram yield from 100 grams PT powder (see attachment). Chemistry is a little rusty but I think the NaCL used to break the emulsion in the extraction jug did end up in the yield and did not stay in the extraction vessel. No miracle here.

Actually it was 7+ grams after the acetone wash.

yeah, from that picture, it looks pretty impure.
it should not taste salty at all.
it should have quite a bitter taste to it and it should smell earthy.
are you sure you let the emulsion settle out completely?
also, 5 pulls is a bit excessive, after 3 or 4 it's not really worth it..
but i totally understand that since you started out with so little plant
material you'd want to get everything you can out of it.

you can try a mini A/B re-extraction on your product. it wouldn't take too long and emulsions should settle
out quite fast. you will probably have some loss of product. i'd do like 2-3 pulls max.

or, you can leave your product as-is if you don't mind eating all of the other crap in there.
