![]() | sun = huge So several years ago I got a san pedro cutting from an outdoor plot that was 3-4.5 inches in diameter. The cutting indoors with good sun and a grow light in the winters grew well but not stout only 2-2.5 inches diameter. So anyways 4 years ago I had to get rid of all my plants and donated them all to a friends mom. Of course she has no idea what it is; and I saw them other day. The san pedro are up high on a bookcase with no direct sun, they are long and skinny and 1-1.5 inches diameter. But one had a nice pup on it. Anyways back to the topic. IMHO lots of sun is good and that goes for several plants. If you live where the climate permits let it live outside.

![]() | Me Too! I also just received 2 cuttings of S. Pedro as a gift. My questions are: 1. They are sections, 1 16in long the other about 12in. They cut at both ends and look dry and callused over with a ring of Roots or something sticking out about a 1/4 in. I will attach some pics and can take more. Does it matter that they are cut off at both ends? will they grow if they have been topped? 2. If they can be rooted with both ends being cut, how large a piece is required to get a successful start? Should I just root them both? Or cut them even smaller and get 3-5 starts out of them? Some threads or links to good cultivation info on these would be great. have had luck growing Jade plants and have always like cacti so it shouldn't be something that I won't like doing or not be good at. |

![]() | Yes, you sure can root a cutting that has been topped off on both ends, just be sure that both ends are calloused well. As to the size of a cutting needed for rooting, 6 inches is usually the minimum but a little bit under should be fine. Larger cuttings seem to root faster so that might be something to consider, plus I think they look better aesthetically in the pot but obviously that could matter less, the small ones will get bigger. So you could probably get 5 cuttings out of those but it might be stretching it a bit, I'd go for four if I was gonna cut. If you do, dusting the ends with a bit of powdered sulfur helps speed up drying and thwarts off possible rot. Make sure it's calloused completely before trying to root! Check this link out. It helped me immensely last year 'round this time after helping a friend remove a 20+ year old plant from his mothers yard and finding myself with a herd of homeless cuttings. I used crushed oyster shell in lieu of the "minus grade" limestone as I had trouble finding it. Check out a feed\farm supply store, thats where I got mine. Anyways, good luck with your new babies, I hope they bring you much joy. ![]()

![]() | Personally, I would not cut the 12 inch one any further. Cuttings that are 9" or more have always done better for me as far as survival, root production, speed of growth, and setting off new pups. I think when they are shorter, they don't have as much energy to put into creation; just my theory. Does the shorter one have roots starting as well? If not, look at the direction of the spines to determine which end to put into soil. If you cut the other in half, put the top half in a ventilated place for roughly 2 weeks until the cut is completely calloused before planting. Or, just eat them! I think it would be enough. Their is a wet to dry cactus conversion in the archives somewhere I believe. You will need at least 30 grams dried [without the white core] of most T. Pachanoi. I prefer 60-90 grams using an alcohol extract. They are fun to watch grow. |

![]() | food for thought, or mind anyways! Thanks to Cactuswren and ScrotoBaggins! Never grew a cactus from cut b/4. Both pieces are callused on both ends. I don't know how long they have been cut. They were given to me to make tea from since I have never had the chance to try cacti b/4. I just don't want to waste them. I am a bit of a hard head when it comes to LSD so I don't know if that will be the same w/ mescaline/cacti. I'd like to try some and to grow as well. I know I will have to order some soon. How long after being cut can cacti be rooted. The calloused ends will root when they are placed in soil? Thanks for the help and thanks for the link, it is bookmarked. |
