    Tiny Poppies

Oh yeah, FOAF's poppies survived but the vast majority of the pods are tiny. Like matchstick head tiny. Any use for these? Do you think they contain any alkaloids?

Some are flowering already, these are like 5" tall plants. Some are still in the vegetative state and are getting larger and might put out some decent pods. These are bread seed poppies (somniferum) of the culinary variety.

They were seeded in February. Nothing special, just cast about. Most of the premature poppies are growing thickly together. I believe they are just too crowded. Some thinning was tried, but FOAF decided that neglect was best.

Not a big deal, since to FOAF this was just a 'lets see what happens' experiment. He was just wondering if the tiny pods were worth saving.

i think you're jumping the gun,
those sound like flowers, not pods, forming.

Ok, you're right, just flowers so far. FOAF just wasn't expecting pods to get very big based on the tiny flowers.

Still though, are small pods worth harvesting? Will they contain active ingredients?

from my experience home grown small pods are active and very good depending on the strain. the few small ones i had were fine. i have ordered small pods that were not very good at all.

I had my first flower approx.5 days ago, 4 have bloomed in the last couple of days, the pedals got knocked off the first one by a hail storm one day after flowering. Two of the next set of flowering poppies have lost their pedals. All pods have been small but not that small. After the pedals dropped the pod is a bit larger than a marble.
Maybe the late snow or something had something to do with it? Other wise all looks to be healthy.

Pictures of my plants are here (Poppy Log)

Yeah, FOAF had a late freeze that lasted about a week. I think it stunted them a little. No worries, they are small plants, but there are tons of them! Got to get me a camera so I can show you guys what FOAF is talking about.

Hmm. Some others in the Somni-Forum in zones 5 and 6 have reported early bolting as well.

Will the pods continue to grow after the pedals fall, or is that it? Stuck with marble sized pods sounds kinda not good to me!

I have noticed an increase in the size of the pod well after the pedals had fallen off. But nothing to write home about. It seems that the size of the foliage at the time when the stem starts to emerge is a real tell-tail sign "how big the pods will be". The larger the foliage the larger the pod ime so far.

yeah cm, I found the same thing last year...good eye.

out of...lets just say many, only one of mine has a stem at this time. must be the strain differences. i found my poppies all bloomed on or near the summer solstice last year. i bet they will still make some good tea even if they are small.

Two weeks after the petals fall, the pods are fully developed and will begin to harden, turning a dark blue. At this time, the pod can be removed from the plant by cutting the thick stem as low on the plant as possible. It can then be hung to dry in the sun if weather permits or inside. Good air circulation is important to prevent mold.

They will continue to grow, but, spacing/size of the plants will also determine final size of the pod. Sorry, but you aren't gonna get golfball sized pods from a 10" plant
