Passiflora incarnata also known as Purple passionflower

I was reading through the Herbal Anxiety Remedy thread and i came across the passiflora incarnata and realized that i had bought my mom one for mothers day a few years ago. So i was doing a little research on it and it sounds interesting. The one thing that has me a little worried about it is its compound called cyanogenic glycocides. When its bonds are broken it releases free hydrogen cyanide and that does not sound too safe to me. So i am wondering if anyone has had any experience with passiflora incarnata or if there is any good teks for extracting the good alks out. It looks as if it has some weak MAOI in it too that might be causing some of the desired effects. I was reading of someone smoking dmt with it and getting some desired reaction with it but it does not seem strong enough to activate oral dmt.

So it can release hydrogen cyanide hey. Sold under the brand name Zyklon B. Nasty shit. I believe water will wash it out but do note that cyanogenic glycosides are found in apples and plumbs. I hope it is relatively safe cause I feed my daughter these fruits haha.

Well thats good to know at least it is found in other things that are safe for consumption. I have found that there are other species that work too including incarnata, involucrata, alata, edulis, quadrangularis, caerulea. The Passiflora caerulea sounds like it has the highest concentration of the cyanogenic glycosides and Erowid said it may be poisonous. The enzymes in the leaf are what break the cyanogenic glycosides down and release free hydrogen cyanide. The enzymes are released when the leaf is crushed. The enzymes in your body might break it down too. So are these enzymes present in apples and plumbs too. I have found that they might boil off in acidic solution but i have not found anything that says that this will for sure work though. I just found that they are doing tests to see if it is useful in ADHD patients with good results.
From Complete Passion Flower information from Drugs.com
i found the chemical make up

    Chemistry

Researchers have identified a number of constituents in different passion flower species. The official passion flower is considered to be P. incarnata , which is used for the drug. 6 Key constituents in P. incarnata include flavonoids, maltol, cyanogenic glycosides, and harman indole alkaloids. 2 Flavonoid content (2.5%) includes flavone di-C-glycosides shaftoside, isoshaftoside, isovitexin (found in highest concentration between preflowering and flowering stages in 1 report), 7 iso-orientin, vicenin, lucenin, saponarin, and passiflorine. 8 Free flavonoids include apigenin, luteolin, quercetin, and kamferol. 6 Another report confirms similar constituents by mass spectral analysis. 9 Flavonoid determination by high-performance liquid chromatography and other methods has been extensively reported. 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 The stability of dried extract also has been studied. 18 P. incarnata components include phenolic, fatty, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic, oleic, and myristic acids, as well as formic and butyric acids, 5 , 19 coumarins, phytosterols, essential oil, maltol (0.05%), 6 , 20 and harman and its derivatives (0.03%). Harmala alkaloids include harmine, harmaline, and harmalol. Quantitative determination of harman and harmin in P. incarnata also has been performed. 21
From what i have read other then in Erowid that the Passion flower is used widely for may different uses with no bad effects. So i would assume as long as you dont take a pound of the stuff you will be ok. I am still interested in others experiences with it though.

I sometimes prep a tea from my Incarnata plant..For me, it's a rather long lasting sedative...
I just make a tea by steeping a couple of whole fresh leaves for an hour or so..The tea is bright green and tastes like Pease..
I don't use it often because the sedating effects carry over to the following day...Your mileage may vary...

Its quite sedating smoked on its own in a water pipe but the smoke seemed very harsh. The idea was to mix with damiana and skullcap in a joint. I hear its a mild maoi ? Gollys tea sounds good

Yes it is a mild MAOI it contains Harmala alkaloids include harmine, harmaline, and harmalol. I was thinking last night what does the heat from making it into a tea or smoking it do to the MAOI, MAOIs degrade with heat dont they.
