I hope that this does not imply a fall from grace of some sort

Im not sure if compost and perlite is what you want to use. Maybe regular potting soil may work better

    Sounds good Devil Dog

Keeping em moist and warm with some light is key with germination. Once they germinate I would move em over to potting soil while they're young(Like Sunstar said). Perlite and sand are good additives once the seedlings get established. Drainage is key for the roots as you seem to know. Its just that very young seedlings like it moist in their first few weeks of life and potting soil is easier to maintain that ime. As long as that is met, they'll be fine until the roots start to grow more.

Welcome to topia btw, glad you made it.

Now we already know that was bad advice once. Why would it be different the second time around?
