Are you just after alkaloids? If so, start with the bridgesii and the non bulk pachanoi at BBB. I have been collecting special clones for a few years and have a nice variety. If you can come accross a trichocereus bridgesii monstrose in the A or B clone variety you will have something special in many ways. With the bridgesoids alone you have many varieties and different looking plants. The same clone grown under different conditions can look like two different species, so it is interesting; to me anyhow.

Once you get a few nice clones then you can start trading with the kind folks of the community to have a varied and awesome collection of rare and beautiful cactus. Read a bunch so you know what to look for is my best advice.

Cactus collecting is addictive so try and get what you will want and love the first time. It doesnt take long to fill up a house with them. I have limited my collection to correctly identified clones and stuff I grow from seed.

The cactus world is full of self proclaimed experts and wannabes. There is much controversy over this or that cactus not being what it is supposed to be etc.

I am not an expert by any means, but I know what I know and I will help you find answers if i can.

    Can you expand on that?

Any particular reason one should avoid the BBB bulk Pachanoi if seeking alkaloids?

Ditto about cactus collecting becoming addicting. Xerescape is a good way to incorporate one's collection into the yard provided you have to climate for them.

I can only talk about what I know. I am not saying the bulk is bad, as much as I am saying the non bulk is good.

the left two cacti are Trichocereus thelegonus from Home Depot. They look like San Pedro with 8 columns. The cactus at the right is a San Pedro. Also from Home Depot.
I don't think Home Depot are cacti experts
