Replacing xylene/toluene in Waylitjim's mesc. extration tek

Hello,

If a FOAF wanted to replace xylene/toluene in Waylitjim's mescaline extraction tek with shellite/naptha - http://www.diggersaust.com.au/files/Shellite.pdf - do you think that is an accetaple alternative?

Additionally, if purchasing a carboy from a home brewing shop, would a rubber or a cork bunger be more appropriate or would neither suffice?

not sure on the replacement.

but, i had a glass carboy for home brewing bust on me after sitting for a few days.

i will NEVER use glass again with lye.

Go plastic hdpe and use a rubber bung!

I would stick with the xylene/toluene
its worked well for me.
and its tryed and tested.

A rubber stopper would be more appropriate. You can get it from the beer supplier too.

Do not replace the xylene with naptha, stick with xylene or toluene only.

If your mescaline comes out brown, you can easily re-crystallize it by following this thread:

I recrystallized the other 2 grams I had recently, and it also came out perfect snow-white. This time I used 10 drops of water when the MEK started boiling.

Not to beat a dead horse, but here's the tek I always follow in dreams:

The only thing I do differently is the following:

* I add the 9 oz of lye crystals to a pint of boiling hot water from the microwave. Add the lye crystals slowly...this will cause the lye to dissolve quickly into the water...then when it's all dissolved, you add it to your carboy. I never add lye crystals directly to the glass carboy...I always add it to the hot water first, then add it...this way I've never had a glass carboy crack.

* I gas to get mescaline that's very close to white. (This takes the guesswork out of titration, or adding 1 to 3 cc of acid directly to water). Gassing also captures all of the alkaloids from the cactus, not just the mescaline, for a more "well-rounded" trip, similar to cactus-tea. Full-spectrum alkaloids.

* I then re-crystallize the mescaline -- this gets you perfect snow-white color mescaline. I prefer snow-white mescaline to brown mescaline since it's free of impurities, makes for a gentle comeup and a spectacular potent trip for this foaf. Brown mescaline just doesn't agree with me or my friend, but others do just fine with it.
