question about raw opium

I was watching on you tube a video that showed raw opium being harvested. The opium when dried was almost like little crystals, quite hard and sticky. I know some people smoke this in villages without refining it. I thought opium was like a gum, easily molded.. how do they smoke this type of crystalline product? Is it heated first? if so, how? I want to know how they would smoke this hard raw opium in a traditional opium pipe specifically. Hippie3??

the hmong are the only people I know of that smoke "raw opium" meaning no cooking preperation. Its smokable in a metal (or other heat enduring substance) based water pipe. Due to the lack of filtrattion raw O contains twigs, and other annoying plant matter making it even HARSHER to smoke-hence the WATER PIPE useage. After the paste has oxidised its ready for this method if you want to call it that.

Opium is graded by number. I don't know off hand, but there is an old publication that told the story quite well. A certain federal agency dealing with drug enforcement made quite the pamphlet on exactly how heroin is made (smokable opium is stop three or four), then pulled it when they realized it was a "how-to" instruction manual with pictures. Believe the impetus of this fun-filled document was drug lords in Afghanistan.
Potassium permanganate(that might be coke), I forget the semi-watched chem needed or atleast often used that isn't watched domestically that bad, yet, of course acetic anhydride is a silly purchase(make it). Not my bag, but it'd be kinda cool. Actually I think theres a reason I haven't done that. Yet.
Look for the document to which I refer, easy enough to find, or I guess I can find it if ya can't.

if it looks "crystalline" i would think it would have been cooked as jahjuice said.opium is usally smoked in a opium pipe which vaporizes the opium. raw opium is rolled/molded into a ball and placed in the pipe then its placed over a lamp or coal to vaporize it.
