Mine always seemed to pop starting on the sixth day. Some will take a month or so, but the majority will pop in the first couple weeks.

You will need to mist them if the soil starts to dry. Only spay enough to keep em moist. You want moist not soaking wet. You can use some saran wrap to cover that container too. That will provide the light needed, prevent the soil from drying out so quickly, and give nice humidity for the seedlings.

never let the soil dry out for seedlings that young.. keep it moist for like 6 months, and then slowely start to acclimate them to a dryer environment... as for the light, leave them in shade or indirect sunlight...after a couple months you can start to give them more light... but always check their colors, if they are red-orange, it mean they are receiving too much... this is what my t.peruvianus seedlings look like at about 1.5 months old, to give you an idea.. good luck! ![]() |

I am planning on starting some cacti cultivation as I mentioned earlier, but nothing like what you got started there. If I had the room, Yes. But anyways, I just wanted to tell you how great your babies looked! ![]() ![]()

wb hidra ![]() afaik cfl/artificial light is perfect for seedlings this young, but to gain alkaloidal content you want actual sunlight. so make sure to get them outside, or at least under metal halide (gives off uv-b light -- next best thing to sunlight) since its said the uv rays are the reason for the gain in goodies ![]() but not until theyre at least large enough to transplant to individual containers.. id say 1-3 years tops, unless, u have a greenhouse. in that case, id for sure transplant em/thin out and go harden them off to the great halide in the sky, but again, only once theyre larger then a finger. just my .02 fwiw ![]() be well |

I heard that San Pedro can grow a 100cm a year, ok not in the first or second but I thought that after a year they will be bigger then 5-10cm ? I was thinking about transplanting after 6-8 months ? and I have another question, they are now in a coco perlight soil (drying too fast ) but and it don't have food, when I need to start give them some ferts and what kind cacti likes ?thank in advance zozo |

You can allow it to callus over the next few days. Once its callused you can pot it (callus down) in a pot a couple inches deep using store bought cactus soil. You can use rock on top of the soil. This will help hold up the cactus upright until it roots and help the moisture content keep that minimal level to promote roots and prevent rot at the same time. Be careful not to over moisten the soil while the cactus has no roots. With no roots it will rot fast. With the gravel in there the soil should stay moist enough for a cutting for well over a month. Depending on the temps. Never the less what seems to be dry soil may still be humid soil that is just right to promote roots. Rooting cactus in my opinion in some ways its like growing mushrooms. Too moist and you lose everything. Too dry you still can have some success. So keep that soil on the dry side. ESP till it has roots. Good luck. Oh and btw, you'll know when roots begin to grow. The cacti's growth rate will pick up and you will notice grow easily. On a side note. If you found that patch near where you live I would get at least one cutting back in the ground once rooted. But near you house. I would really love to be able to put some of mine in the earth around my house. But its just too damn cold here in the winter. ![]() Nice find and Im glad you only took a few small pups.

it makes weak plants when they are taller. Don't water in the winter during low light as much to avoid this. I'm about to plant a bunch of seeds pretty soon. Also that huge pedro is a great find, that thing must be really old!! |

Stop watering them and allow the soil to dry. Then place them in a cool dark location until Winter is over and temperatures rise above 73*F during the day. Etiolation is not fatal your cacti - until they try to get bigger. The skinny part will stay skinny - breaking off when it becomes overloaded with new growth. BTW, Awesome photograph!!! Love the horizontal parent stock with the vertical offsets shooting from the trunk!!

Yeah I would be doing it outside but it is getting cold here at night and around 60 in the day. I am going to get a reptile heat mat and the seeds will be germinating in individual little seed cup planters (2" wide x 3" deep) inside of a plastic reservoir with a see through fitted plastic lid. I will set that under my fluoro.
