Dmt Clean Up

Tonight SWIM believes, he will be starting his first STB dmt extraction.

I am super excited and am hoping every thing goes as planned.
Although I am curious, what is the tested tried and true method
for cleaning up your final product. I was thinking of doing my 1st and 2nd NP pulls and throwing them straight in the freezer, no evap just straight to the freeze precipitate. will it be necessary to do a Ammonia wash or soda ash wash, even with the freeze precipitate? or Would recrystallization be in order as well.

I just want to make a good product healthy for smoking even if the potency doesn't work out, i want to insure the health of my friends and my self when we are sampling the product. Thanks every body.

i would recrystallize and not bother with ammonia or soda ash wash.
i imagine you're anxious to test it out.
after you do that some, if you feel like experimenting more, you can do
subsequent recrystallizations, try treating with activated carbon, etc.

Lol, yeah I am a little bit anxious, but not so anxious to no do things by the book. Ill take your word for it and go recrystallization, Just want to make sure every things clean.

What would you recommend for recrystallization, naphtha or heptane?

I am not sure where or how to obtain heptane? but i believe it is available in in a rubber cement remover, not sure if i can find it in Canada. But i will research.

you would do well to evap about half the volume of nap before you put it in the freezer. a hot water bath would work just fine.

could a hot water bath just simply be a pot of extremely warm not boiling water, out side with my container floating in the water?

keep the naptha below 130 degrees. I recomend a fan, SWIM has a little space heater which is a fan w a heating element and it is sweet.

Perfect I just so happened to have a tiny dog house space heater that will do the trick

Swim likes the low boiling point of heptane.

He also prefers a few re-X-als as his clean up. You can get it very clean, depending on how much product you are willing to lose.

A couple of swims tricks on freeze precip:

Don't go straight from the heat to the freezer. The slower the solvent cools down the bigger the crystals and the bigger the crystals the purer the crystals.

Some excess solvent and longer time in the freezer. The excess solvent WILL lower the amount of crystals that crash out. Combined with the extra time in the freezer you will get purer crystals. When the crystals are forming the outer layer of them will redissolve and reform leaving out the impurities. As a result the inside of the crystals will be pure (or close enough) and the outer layer will have more impurities. With the extra solvent and extra time the outer layer will reform several times cleaning itself (a little) each time.

After this the outer layer will still be less pure than the inside of the crystal so a rinse with some cold solvent will wash it off, but again this will cause more loss.

Where and how can I obtain heptane, i am unsure of its store name, and also I am in canada, and i already cant find vm&p naphtha all your help is much apprecited

i believe you can find it at like micheals craft store under the name bestine. rubber cement remover good luck!!!!!!!

Can you find shellite? Equally as effective. Swim lives in Australia and here you can get shellite at the supermarket, hardware stores and sometimes even in service stations.

Sometimes places that sell firesticks and poi's and the such sell it too.

Just another word for Naphtha

Naphtha is petroleum ether, shellite is petroleum spirits. Shellite has a boiling point of 42 deg Celcius. I might be wrong but I think naphtha's boiling point is higher. Not sure though, never used naphtha as I can't get it here.

Lol I no that all to well, your extracts are turning out ok with shellite though?

Swims extracts are fine. Swim actually believes there to be advantages with shellite. Rather than evap he just boils it down. The low boiling point means it won't hurt the DMT.


Swim extracts from acacia which is a lot fattier than MHRB and as such he uses a slightly more complicated method than you will need. As swim has never used MHRB he will leave it to others to say which is the best method.

You can obtain heptane here in the states at arts and craft stores.
On the East Coast we have "Micheal's" craft stores. The product you will be looking for is "Bestine", this is a rubber cement thinner and solvent. It costs about $ 9 US for a pint.

Very fast evap .... so remember the cap on the Bestine can.

my FOAF saw your thread and told me to tell you that
he has just recently done a STB extraction of MHRB for his first extraction ever
after much research, they used the tek posted by Lysergic as a guide with a little bit of improvisation and small bits from other teks.
this is my FOAF's first pull from 1/2 lb of MHRB. the only cleaning done to it was 1 rextalization in Bestine to remove oils and then freeze precipd. very clean I think for my FOAF's first attempt! ( I believe my FOAF'S bark originated from bouncingbear. )

Naphtha, shellite, and heptane can u use any one of these for defatting or does naptha have to be used?
