| The general view I have found seems to be that mescaline is very stable and therefore does not degrade with heat when extracting from cactus. I have often used the method listed here: http://www.clearwhitelight.org/hatter/sprecipe.htm. It calls for heating the cactus in a crock pot for 2 days. I have got results, although I've always wanted more. However, I have recently come across a few websites saying that mescaline content is reduced significantly if the cactus is boiled for too long: http://www.totse.com/en/drugs/psyche.../cactusgg.html and http://www.erowid.org/plants/cacti/c..._guide16.shtml. Does anyone know which is correct? Or does anyone have a good idea based on past experience? I really don't want to be reducing the strength by as much as 4x! (as one of the above pages says) |

| I don't think how long you cook the cacti matters as much as the temperature. I've always cooked my cacti for about 6 hours and never noticed a difference in potentcy compared to just eating dried cacti chips. ( sooo nasty)Never went 2 days. This is just my opinion and experience.

| It takes alot more heat than boiling water to destroy the alkanoids in the cactus, I was curious to this question aswell and read somewhere they start to break down at 260+ Degrees Fahrenheit but if anyone knows for sure.... I could be wrong. |

| well im not sure but i think in order to make a good extraction from the cacti you should simmer it again and again until no bitterness is left in the liquid. so i dont think simmering it for too long will decrease the potency,it will just make it even stronger. simmering is different from boiling though,as the temperatures are not the same. |
