![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Anyone tried miracle fruit before cactus tea? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synsepalum_dulcificum just curious. I suck at getting nasty tasting things down and dont want to waste any cactus when the time comes. Seems like it might help but would like to see if there is any first hand experience around the board. |

I was wondering the same thing would be nice to have something for that taste. My tea doesn't taste very bad at all though then again I have been tripping off cactus for so long I am used to the taste. But, I do know that KTbotanicals sells it. Not sure if bbb does or not. Probally does though.

I'm hoping someone tries this and reports on it soon. I have thought about it since I saw miracle fruit first mentioned here and thought it would help w/ the tea. I didn't have much problem w/ the tea but if it works reasonably well why not try it. So, I guess we see who tries it first. ![]() I was also wondering; If miracle fruit makes bitter things taste sweet, does it affect any other tastes? Will it make my tea taste good but my dinner later taste bad? ![]() Things to ponder.

I believe what it does is it binds to the taste receptors in your mouth for sour and bitter. So if you eat something sour or bitter after wards, those receptors are not available for the food to bind to. Thus, you only experience whatever other flavors are in the food. I'm guessing the cactus will still taste... cactussy it just won't be bitter. Oh and the effects don't last that long. I can't remember exactly how long but i think somewhere in the realm of 20-40 minutes.

Great idea, Psychodrogue! I went to a "taste tripping" party once. From what I experienced there, I would conjecture that the miracle fruit would make one perceive the cactus tea as sweet instead of bitter.

![]() But then if it makes one nauseous, no one would have discovered it changes your taste as no one would have been hungry enough to notice the effect.

Buy the tablets the berries rot in a day or three. The tablets are great for me they tend to work for 30-40 min your milage may vary.

i don't think the fruit tabs will work to cover the taste of cacti. sorry.. IME doesn't work on bitter things. it will turn sour things like lemons sweet and hot stuff like to tabasco neutral, and sweet things... extra sweet. bitter.... still bitter. i didn't try it on a brew.... but i do think i remember munching a piece of a cutting... and it was bitter. |

We haven't heard back from anyone who has yet. We are all waiting in the wings for that first adventurer to appear and report back to us!

As stated before, it would be very hard to get the actual berries unless you had a tree yourself. To try this any time soon, you would probably have to try a tablet. I have tried the fruit as well. Not too sure how it would be though. The most bitter thing I have tried would be a Guiness. Made it taste like chocolate. Well, I hope someone will try and let us know.

There is a (non-sponser) ethnobotany retailer that sells cuttings of this interesting plant. They cost about 20 bucks. SWIM is thinking of trying his hand at cultivating them. Last edited by Coughing_Anon; 12-19-08 at 22:14. Reason: more info |

i have tried those berries / seeds long ago.. but it was not with cactus tea.. they do work.. you have to suck on them as much as you can so that it goes all over your tongue and mouth.. lime / lemon juice taste sweet as candy.. sour soup tastes sweet and really weird.. but yeah it does not last long.. so i guess you have to keep on sucking more seeds.. and i did not feel any side effects whatsoever..anyone try it with cactus tea yet?

Ok. The results are officially in. I FINALLY got around to trying this and sadly, the answer is no. Miracle Fruit does NOT mask the taste of cactus tea. Materials: ~6 oz. cactus tea made from 80g dried san pedro flesh Miracle fruit tablets Lime Procedure: Prelim. Taste test of cactus tea: nasty, bitter, salty, heinous ![]() Cleanse palate with water Let miracle fruit tablet dissolve on tongue Eat slice of lime to confirm action of miracle fruit Drink the tea ![]() Results: Miracle fruit alone failed to provide any relief from the taste of the tea. However, following slugs of tea with a bite of lime while in the miracle-fruit zone made the consumption of the remaining volume of tea slightly less unpleasant.

i would venture to say it only works with sour items as many said before, especially now that there is first hand experience posted!. thanks a lot of that. interesting idea taking something sour right after and then neutralizing the resulting taste. did the final experiment prove worth its time/effort to do it again when you take tea in the future drastronaut?
