A buddy has procured 5 lbs. of dried poppy pods, think they are tasmanians or a common strain of p. somnif. They are not hens & chicks or gigs by size and looks.

Anyway, any ideas of APPX. amount of opium gum / reside could be obtained by heating and evaporating for a smoke-able paste?

AND would extracting with ethanol produce a sweeter / better smoke? I've read it does in other forums....

Hi, welcome to mycotopia. The possibility of obtaining a quality smokeable product from dried pods has been debated for a long time. There is another internet forum where the topic led to a 40 page long thread!. Most people have failed at attempting this with commercial dried pods. They steep the finely ground pods in hot(not boiling) water for a couple hours, then filter through a few coffee filters and evaporate the water. Almost always, the end result is a dark brown to black gooey mass that is nearly impossible to smoke or vaporize. It sizzles for a second or two, turns into a hard black mass of ash. It's almost impossible to work with.

From that 40 page thread only three people had success using this method. The main reasoning is that these commercial pods are of negligable potency and there's no telling how old(and degraded) they are.
You may have better luck if you have stumbled across potent FRESH dried pods. It may be worth a shot. Even if the product ends up unsmokeable, one can still just eat it for the same effect as poppy tea.

Also, that TEK calls for adding citric acid to the filtered tea until it is very slightly acidic. He claims this may make the alkaloids more bioavailable.

That's pretty much it... I haven't seen any actual teks that show a smokable opium,
only peeps claiming to have done so. Then again, I've seen peeps claiming to have smoked
shrooms, to have grown shroom mycelia for commercial consumption, etc., etc.

This is one of those "I'll believe it when I see it" kind of things. Honestly, if making opium (or a smokable opiate resin, if you prefer) from pods were possible, I think it'd be
a common practice... who would drink that nasty tea if a viable alternative were available?
Opiate hardheads have been experimenting with this for years... if you figure something out, please let us know,
but I'm doubtful until I see a reasonable tek with pics, etc.

If an opium smoke is what you're after, I recommend growing your own and bleeding them. The results of that can't be disputed. I have smoked the extract and it takes a good amount and it isnt worth it, nor is it as nice as opium.
