When buying MHRB, is it better to buy whole bark, or can I instead buy already powdered? Will powdered MHRB not "keep" as long as bark, or am I just crazy in thinking this way?

People I know buy whole bark so they can see what they are getting. If you buy the whole bark, you gotta shred it yourself- which can be a a real PITA. If you buy it pre-powdered, you will need to use more water in your extraction.

I agree w/ Lys 100% If you have a supplier that you can trust, order the powder. I got the bark and I now wish I had the powder. Grinding up the bark is the biggest ordeal of the whole process IMHO.

but you're going to want the solution to be more "liquid" than "sludgy" if that makes sense.

Depending on your method, you'd just need to add a little more NaOH if doing an STB or more acid if doing an A/B. The only real constraint that you might run into would be the size of the extraction vessel you were using. If you do an A/B, you can reduce the amount of liquid once you've filtered out the bark.

I once was twisting the bark into smaller pieces, and grind-ed off a nickle sized piece of flesh from the side of my thumb with it. It was a perfect red hole after it dried, with a white outer rim of non-damaged skin. It can be a pain to do this way, and takes longer to grind as well. A regular sized coffee bean grinder seems to comfortably fit about 7 or 8 grams it seems, so will make grinding 100g take more than a couple hours. |

SWIM uses about a half a gallon of water and adds 1lb of lye and lb of bark, then tops the jug off with a little more water. He just makes sure to leave a lil room for shaking and 3-400 mls solvent for 3-4 pulls in a gallon jug.. First he adds the lye slowly until when shaking the jug no longer heats it. Be sure to shake it well because it doesn't all dissolve quickly and also be sure to vent the jug after shaking, as it heats. When hard shaking no longer warms the water in the jug, then the bark is added, the water topped off to leave enough room for shaking and solvent, and shaken very hard again, then put in a heat bath in the sink for about 1-2 hours. Then he adds the solvent, and shakes again for the first pull (he repeats 3X, usually). He gets really finely ground powder, but still gets great yields and doesn't use nearly as much water as some STB teks advise. They are right though, if it is sludgy, one may have to split it into two vessels, and add more water. If this is the case, one will probably have to use more solvent, as well, but it's not a big deal as the solvent can be used over again after freeze precipitating crystals.. As long as a recrystallization is performed, one can turn all the yellow DMT into pure white, with a little fresh solvent. For grinding bark, SWIM found that chopping with a pair of heavy duty fiskars or snips, he could cut the bark into small pieces. He tried various blenders, but the best one was a cheap $15 blender. Most of them wear out the blade attachment piece in the pitcher before anything else. Looking for one with a decent pitcher, but not super powerful motor, may be good. One with blades that have two pointing downward and two pointing upward in a cross shape work better than with the two blades parallel, instead of the cross formation, as well. SWIM also recommends using very small amounts at a time to be sure to make the blender last longer. Beware of the dust, it can cause one a serious cough or worse, so be sure to get proper dustmasks and ventilation and do this away from anything that could be damaged by the dust.

Like it was mentioned before, get a good source and powdered is great- beats the heck out of breaking that stuff up, and should only be about $4 more than whole root bark. keep us updated
