Length of life for cactus cutting?

I have a big fat cutting of San Pedro I won from the midsummer madness raffle (w00t!). My wife and I want to make some tea, but we have very busy schedules right now.

Our chances would be better in December. Will a cutting live that long without being planted? Should I just plant it and order a new cutting for tea when the time is right?

Thanks in advance!

no worries my friend you can keep them unrooted for over a year, and i would also suggest to get another cutting, one pedro cutting wont be enough for 2 to really tripp, im guessing that it is a 12 inch.
congrats again on winning

well some might say dry it out but I like to use fresh cactus when I make a tea, so imo what I would do is slice it up and put into freezer. It should be fine if your aimeing for december, the only thing about being in the freezer that long is that it will probally start gushing out juice if you will, a thick sludle like consistancy will come out so make sure you double bag it or something because your deffanantly going to want that slude, It's got alot of the alks.

Or yes you could always plant it because it will only get better. just yes make sure you order more if you do that because when you grow you don't want to water for a long time before you harvest. good luck

Thanks for the responses, and thanks for giving me an excuse to get more cacti.

I've had them rot on me when kept at warm room temps during the summer. Not all will rot but it can happen. Keep the cuttings out of the sun and they can last a long time but don't keep them in the dark. It is a plant and likes some light. You may see roots starting to grow. They sometimes come at odd spots. You may also see growing tips starting from one of the aureoles where the spines are. If you don't want it to grow just freeze it but then it will be dead when you take it out. It will still be good for tea.

Just ordered three Bridgessi (sp?) cuttings from Bouncing Bear. One will be planted. Also, the other San Pedro prize cactus gets to grow.

My little family is quickly growing!

Thanks again for the help!
