Mesc Extract Question

My first attempt... this is a picture of what i got.... does it look anything like what its suppose to? .. my yield was 1.6 from 3000grams of fresh san pedro ... i only did 2 pulls.... uhmmm The acid smell was extremely strong, overpowering in fact during the last 10 minutes of the evaporation process... I havent done any "cleaning" to this product,, this is just i dunno what i got from evapping the water with hcl in it.. it was really tacky at first, but now its almost like sand (i heated it up more then chopped it up).

Could someone describe what it should smell like... I thought it should be brown.. mine was brown,, i left it on the stove longer hoping to "evap some the hcl away" ... it then turned black... i dunno never tried an extract before so any info i forgot to add my bad i havent slept am about to pass out just wanted to post before i went to bed, hopefully wake up to some help

congrats on getting this far
its a bit dark

properly cleaned it should be completely odorless
no sharp or weird smells

you may lose up to .6 of that in cleaning it
however, i think its worth it
but its your decision what to do

how to clean:
dissolve your mesc in water 100 ml
filter the mesc water (use a fine filter, like a "charmin plug") this will remove some of that blackness
get some MEK
mix the mesc water and mek (use a lot of mek, 500ml +)
shake together
put in freezer
wait until the water freezes solid (you will see lots of pretty ice crystals in the mek)
decant the mek through a regular strainer to catch the ice
transfer all the ice to your evap dish and evap (be quick right here cause the ice on the strainer might be melting)
after its done evapping, scrape, chop,
wash mesc with dry acetone
let the mesc dry
dissolve in 50 ml hot water
evap

it may only be colored tan at this point, but it should be odorless and shiny crystalline
if its not, coz your product is extra cruddy, because you were extra sloppy and maybe even high when doing the extraction,
repeat the mek wash until u are happy with what you see

my dude used this procedure to clean 6g of gnarly very dark chocolate brown extract to 5.2g of very light tan and off-white odorless mesc extract
that took a 900 mls of MEK in 2 washes

My guess is that you used WAY too much acid. You should barely be able to smell the amount of HCl required.

umm yea the problem is that you deffenantly used way to much acid when salting.

If it were me I would solute that back into H20 basify again, do a pull , and salt out properly. even when you use more material then that you only need a few drops of acid, if hci. I would say theres no more than 500mg of pure mesc in there.

cactus is estimated to be 91% water weight, so that would be about 300 grams dried, I think lol, and contain around 1% on average that would come out to 300mg.

mhmm... If i add some water (just water) and dissolve the substance into water.. then evap it again.... is it safe to eat? I really dont feel like cleaning it any further im just looking forward to my first mesc experience... if i enjoy it im sure in any future attempts ill go through the extra effort but for right now im just trying to make sure i actually like it before i put in so much work...

however if it will not be safe to eat then of course im going to clean it lol.

Also thanx for the advice already given, couldnt even have gotten this far without this site

No adfense, it's your first time so we will forgive you lol but, that is some of the darkest stuff i have ever seen. without knowing exactlyl what you did I dont know what's in there. imo you should clean it.

In the future if you want a easier process just do an alcohol ext.. it gets it to a black tar. so so easy, easier then tea and way less messy.
Imo I also like it better because it has the other alks in it. I personally am not a fan of pure mesc.

Another thing aside from too much Hcl would be the fact you let it burn on the stove trying to evap it too quickly. Please do yourself a favor and recrystal.

Easy clean/reXtal by dissolving your Mescalito completely in ~50ml IPA (70% will do but 91% is better, use just enough to dissolve the chems) and then wash by adding 300ml of acetone. Swirl well and place in a heat bath. As the chems evaporate down the clean crystals will crash out. After reducing a bit place in the freezer to precipitate. Filter and dry. Enjoy.
