Reishi?

I found these growing by the edge of my sidewalk, on my front lawn....Unfortunately, this one got kicked over or something because I fond it lying on the ground today....

grew into this:

and these were about a foot away:

They look pretty "Ganoderma" type. I'll bet if you dig around under the ground where you found them, you will find wood. slp/fmrc

Cool I agree, looks like Ganoderma species to me too..

I bet there is a large hardwood tree nearby, most likly oak, that is still alive but with lots of dead branchs on its top ( or else there used to be one nearby). My guess is that the insides of the tree have already rotted out (or it has already died and been removed) and those Ganoderma's are growing from the infected root system.

Cool find

Very interesting....I have to admit...that has to be the first time i've seen them growing in that type of environment....I agree there is a tree possibly nearby, or wood underneath them.

very cool pics!

No, I don't think so...The neighborhood was built in the fifties, so it's well established. Just these big 'ol pine trees which are obviously not hardwood. Mid-Atlantic U.S., btw.

By the way, how can you tell when these are mature for picking?

When you see a dusting of spores on the top of conk is a
good sign the are mature . They sporulate from the underside
but it will cause an accumulation of spores on top of the conk.

On a popular whitewater river in Tennessee I once saw a large hemlock tree (NOT the kind of hemlock Soctrates drank, for those of you not familiar with the tree) with many Ganodermas all over it. They were huge, some almost 12 inches across. The tree was down on the side of the river, and with regulated recreational water releases it was partially submerged for about 8 hours a day, five days a week. Yours might be growing from the root of the tree in the picture even though it's not hardwood (like hemlocks).

You bet me too it, I think that type of species that grows on Hemlock is Ganoderma Tsugae. RR has done alot of work with that one if I recall correctly.

I saw one of those about 2 weeks ago when I was mowing. I forgot about it and it was gone a couple days later.
I found these close by today.

Spacecowboy: I just noticed that antler coming out of the cake in your avatar, that's cool as hell. Was that regular BRF or a sawdust cake? (or something in between?). I gotta try that.

Hey 420, it looks like you have a patch of mycorrhizal Boletus dryophilus. They are sooo pretty. Pinch one and it will stain blue! I would be very interested in seeing updated pics of your last shot- including gill shots. How big are those?
