Aspens are pretty rare here, I'm about a hundred miles south of the natural range at my longitude. We went out all day and came back with nothing. I flushed a woodcock off a clutch of young hatchlings. I'm going to spend tomorrow building a greenhouse and gardening and go out next weekend.

black cherry might be your best bet, along with green and white ash trees-- and earlier in the seaon they tend to flush closer to the tree ive noticed. if you can find some pines they can be good for blacks according to some--although they have not been my most productive trees in my personal experience ive seen pics with enough for several meals standing beneath them.

Well here they are! First finds of the year for me. Thanks greys for the encouragement! Some small greys and an unknown woodlover, with black spores. The greys were found under a living elm tree. We've had a good rain over the last few days and temps from 60's to 70's. It Is On Now! I'll be out daily . Damn slugs were already on both types. foster

ive got confirmation on 2 small finds...maybe a possible third...didnt get enough evidence to call it a confirmation. all were inland in the central /west are of north carolina. i would imagine youve got about 7-9 days before the main flush. hope this helps. Foster your unknown woodlover looks like coprinus micaceus to me. fresh specimens usually have small grains of "salt" on the cap.

It would be roughly simlilar, and theyre always good to check. ive hunted in most midwest states but never on the eastern seaboard ben dover. i would definitely concentrate on hardwoods more than anything else, as i find more in hardwoods than anything else in the midwest. If you see a different pattern where you are i would love to hear about it.

And here is the fun story. Ive been searching or morels in severel spots i beleived to be worthy. No luck as of yet, my mom rang me up the other day that very close to their house, in one of the towns suburbs, there are morels growing on the street, on the roundabout, around hedges and just about everywhere on that street. I thought it must be bohemicas they tend to grow anywhere and in huge flushes. You can imagine how shocked i got when i checked out the place for my selfe and realies that these are infact true morels. See pic below, iam not sure of sp. Grey u prolly know.

well you cant dna test a pic on the internet but id say you have M. angusticeps there !! wOOOOt way to go kocos. wish they grew right out in the open in my neighborhood!! were your "verpa" filled with a cottony substance and the cap only attached at the very top to the stem?? if it was hollow and the cap hangs down like a skirt partially attached to the stem you have Morchella semilibera . just by looking at your pictures and consulting George Barrons book...it LOOKS like you have Morchella semilibera or half free morel.which is fragile but edible....

Yes the "verpa" was filled with cottony material, and cap was just atached at top of stem, like a skirt as you mentioned. The other ones were very fragile, i should have taken more pictures as there were so many different varieties, light ones brown ones, black ones, grey ones, pointy ones, fat ones, flat ones, etc Pretty cool, just a shame they are growing beside the road, thus not edible.
