![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | First Edible Grow ( Pleurotus columbinus) The slant has been kept in the fridge. I plan on using it in some grain jars. Do I need to bring the slant to room temp before making the transfer?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks. My concern with warming it up was that it would encourage mycelium growth and I don't want to do that since i am not using the whole slant.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ok so a small portion was taken from the slant and placed into the center of two jars on 8/21. I can only see growth in one of the jars so far.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Time for an update. These were taken this morning, 9 days after the transfer. I have read a bit and I am wondering what is your favorite fruiting medium for these? Since this was a trial run for me I only have these two half pint jars. So please keep that in mind if you provide measurements. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ok so here is the update with pics ![]() Here are the jars looking so pretty. I waited for the second one to catch up a bit. oyster2 9-2.jpg oyster 9-2.jpg This is what i am going to use to spawn them too. I didn't add any bran because i didn't have any. I hope it works. aspen wood.jpg Water was added to field capacity and it now looks like this field capacity.jpg Then it was pasteurized for 2hours and now looks like this with the jars added to it. log.jpg Slits were made in the top of the bag. I was unsure what to do with it so I put it back in the incubator to recover before pinning. Any advice? I understand that oysters need lots of fresh air, so i had planned on using the hair dryer in the incubator. Do you think this will work? Or should I place it in the fruiting chamber? I am just unsure if what to do at this point. ![]()

![]() | i don't think darkness is needed. the hair dryer sounds good, don't let it get too hot [disconnect heating element]

![]() | Merm, there is no need for a fruiting chamber. Just poke the holes in the bag for FAE and let em run at room temp. I'm sure you'll succeed in this. But please don't use a fruiting chamber. They need a cooler temp than the cubes, and way more FAE.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Per crazy's request, the log was put in the closet and is doing really well. The one thing that i have noticed about the aspen crumblings is that around the slits they seem to be drying out a bit. So, I have misted them lightly. Here is an update pic! OOOOH i am so excited!!! ![]() | Glad to see more folks doing edibles! I'm starting to do some edibles, too. My first oysters, blues and yellows, were on aspen and did very well. Pics are on an old hard drive, though, and I haven't transferred them. Lastest are on straw. 1 quart of colonized bird seed to a 2.5 gallon ziploc. Wicked tasty. Don't leave 'em too long, you'll get sporesickles! It's unreal how many spores those things produce.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | well, i don't have any pins yet. I'm not too sure what I'm doing wrong. I've even contemplated removing the log from the bag. It's getting plenty of humidty and fresh air. I'm guessing the temps may be too warm. Would cold shocking it help induce fruiting?

![]() | Merm, don't worry you're not doing anything wrong. The P. ostreatus var. columbine is slow to fruit. Usually mine fruit about 4 weeks or so after the inoc to the straw or other bulk sub. Give em time. This mushroom requires a bit more patience. Trust me, I've been through the same ordeal as you the first grow I did of these. Hang in there ![]()

![]() | are the temps above the high 70"s merm? If so, cooler is better. I've fruited them in the hallway of the house here. A cold shock could help the pinning, 50°F for about 24 hrs might do the trick. (that's air temp, not a cold soak)

![]() | I guess it's strain dependent, but any temperature in the 60-70 degree range should be fine for fruiting with this species. Those projects are more than ready to fruit. 4 weeks is a long time IMO. If these were my projects; i'd cut a slit along the entire top of the bags and would make sure that they were in sub 70 degree temps, along with 95% relative humidity. 1 good air exchange an hour in a somewhat large fruiting chamber. Smaller chambers may need more exchanges an hour. You'll know if the CO2's high if the primordia spike tall and thin.
