Here's an update on this second tub. The first group are Friscosa's and the last one is P. azurescens. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Azures

Just a few more Frisco's. The azure tub didn't do all that well. I think they do better in the ground. I'm really hoping the subaeruginascens come up this season. They'd be a nice addition to this thread. ![]() ![]() A few azures....

Sterile, as in, did they not produce any spores? It appears that they did not, as their gills are pale and there doesn't appear to be any spore deposits on their caps. I'm just puzzled at the propensity of cultivated mushrooms to end up producing sterile fruits. |

Or alternatively, check out the following image of waylit's: ![]() Notice how the gills are pale? With a dark-spored species, this means there are few or no spores present. | |

You're correct psylence, the azures pictured above didn't drop spores. Not even a light print. Most of the azures in the second flush didn't drop spores either, but 2 or 3 of them did. What's the reason for fungi not producing spores? I'd say about 70% of the Friscosa's left a spore deposit. Quote:
But these should work

| I've asked Workman about this, as I've had the problem in a couple of species now and one of the main reasons I grow exotics is to help conserve and share them, so not having them produce spores in self-defeating. Logically, sterility can sometimes be attributed to a genetic defect, but it doesn't make sense if the grow has been started from multi-spore. If the grow is a blind isolate and they turn out sterile, then a genetic defect seems plausible. Workman also suggested that it can be substrate related, with excessive levels of nutrients leading to mushrooms not being able to produce spores. I'm not really sure how that works, but it helps explain why the mushrooms in the first flush are often sterile, but produce spores in subsequent flushes, as the nutrient levels have been lowered. I think there must be some other environmental factors at work too though. |

WaylitJim, Wow, I am speechless at the beauty of those mushrooms!! This is an incredible thread, dont know how I didnt see it until yesterday. Good work Jim!!! Anyway, I am amazed at the simplicity of the grow. Is it really that easy??? I noticed that you kept the mycelium in the block when you transferred into the chip mulch. But Did you do the same thing before when you transferred the popcorn to the alder woodchips in the filter bag? I mean, did you break up the popcorn or leave it in a chunk. It appears that you left it in a chunk. What about watering? did you let nature do that or did you help? One more question I guess. Do you think this same tek could be used for Ovoids in the spring/summer? If so When would be a good time to start? Would you do anything different? I know that Ovoids Like sandy soils with well rotted wood right? Anyway I look forward to your reply and thanks for such an awesome thread Man. Peace, Subbal

![]() | Alder Alternatives? Hardiness?
Those are really beautiful. Would Hickory, Apple, Cherry, Maple, Mesquite, or Butternut chips make a good substitute for Alder? Also, which woodlovers would you say are the hardiest in terms of cold tolerance? What about in terms of tolerating periodically dryer conditions? Thank you for your input and the truly inspiring photos. |

Hi, did you have on a lid or foil on he tubs..(I dad a foil roof, semi open) did the rain fall on the casings....(if it rained heavy it passed) did you have any draining holes (i had, snungs, worms and many more entered) you sure have a nice grow..(mine was years ago, lasted for years..well just like one trip left, have to grow cubies )I had some tubs of Azure going and spread it out to spawn more wood and it never recovered..a shame, I had lots of insects and snugs, too and worms staring to trasform my tubs into wormcasting..so I pread it out.. was the last year I saw Azures..they still alive..but weak, without vigor..and do not fruit and got contaminated by other mushrooms and stuff my best results were in a bag of woodchips.. I will try woodmycobags with Azures and any woodlover I can find also azures are my favourite shroom to eat.. best regards and wonderfull grow (i saw a few over at shroomery that were comparable, also Azures, cyans and sups, just beautyfull) |

Sorry for the delay... I left the lids loosely on the tubs. Open enough to allow fresh air, but closed enough to keep humidity high. The tubs were kept in an outdoor garden shed. Quote:
