![]() ![]() | Nice Post It's a good idea to share info about deadly Amanitas Symptoms of poisoning Amanita virosa and its relative Amanita bisporigera both contain the deadly amatoxin poisons, and since they are so common in North America they have been responsible for many cases of severe poisoning and death. The first symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, persistent diarrhea, and severe stomach pains; the onset of symptoms normally occurs some eight to ten hours or as long as twenty-four hours after eating a meal containing these amanitas. After this there may be a period of apparent improvement before the second effect of the poisoning occurs; this is a deterioration in function of both the liver (hepatic failure) and the kidneys (renal failure). These will show up in the patient as yellowing or discoloration of the whites of the eyes and skin, as in hepatitis, and also in discoloration of the urine. Thus, it is crucial not to leave the patient untreated during the first stages. The sufferer should be taken immediately to the nearest hospital and the doctors informed that mushrooms were eaten during the past few days so that there is no possibility the doctors will misidentify the cause of the poisoning. ![]() |

![]() | I've got that same book Waylit. It's a good one for sure. I'm having a hard time remembering the near identical mushroom that causes people to mistake the poisonous mushroom for the edible mushroom. The 2 are nearly identical, with the exception of a few characteristics like spores exc., but they look identical nearly. One way to tell the Amanita from the edible is; the bulb like bottom of the stem on the Amanita is enclosed in a sack of skin. If you use your fingers to gently massage the bulb on the stem, the skin of the sack will move around on the Amanita. The sack should pull away from the bulb on the stem on the Amanita. That's one way I read you can tell the difference in the Destroying Angel and the edible look alike. Regardless, don't attempt to eat any of the 2. More information on the species............ http://www.mushroomexpert.com/amanita_bisporigera.html

![]() | Eating poisonous mushrooms kills. Most of the people who survive to tell the tale after eating Destroying Angels, say that they do not taste bad.. if the white Amanita's tasted really disagreeable, than we would have far less poisononings happening. |

| i think there is an asian volvariella that resembles the american version of the destroying angel. i believe aroras books has that in it but not positive. its a big book. the website at cornell waylit put up is excellent reading for ppl new to gathering wild edibles. i have always approached my research from the standpoint of being just as familiar with the poisonous or sickeners as i am the choice edibles. |
