A colleague of mine used to pick these in Puebla.

Nope, just grass seed. I never got around to doing the straw. I am not really certain why it worked so much better this time. Maybe substrate depth.

Yeah, they really have a very iconic psilocybe look and very Mexican. Its hard to explain. It is appealing though.

The growing parameters are the same as for Psilocybe mexicana which is what I also use for Panaeolus cyanescens (and allies) to good effect. But it seems very adaptive and probably has a wide range of fruiting parameters. It will also fruit invitro on agar and grains. It also appears extremely contaminate resistant with no problems even after months in the fruiting chamber. It is very slow growing and not a good species for the impatient. If it grew faster, I'd say it was very easy to grow.

One of the sweetest psilocybes we've seen. Too bad they're not good as a commercial species because of their slow growth. At least that's my opinion.

    Elektrolurch's Semps

    Hi there,
4yrs. ago I grew a lots of mushrooms (the 'legal ones': pilzolli.de) and at that time I also followed the Semperviva Threads @shroomery.
Now while my youngest kid is about 2 yrs. I find time again to care about those beauties.

And guess what? I do have 2 prints from Elektrolurch
One of his Semperviva cultures. And the other from his Zapotecorum's.

I have great trouble to get my Pans and some other rare Psilocybe spores to germinate. They have been stored correctly but are 4+ yrs. old.

I haven't tried the above ones. Now workman, did you do something special with the spores? Soak them in sterilized water or so?
Or did you just inoculated them the usual way?

I feel I should give them a try, too. My last attempts with a different Semperviva strain (which came from Michael Ganslmeier, Kassel) weren't successful. They grew very fast on agar and grain spawn (with a little straw & horsemanure) but failed to fruit.

So, please would you tell me how you handled those aged spores?

    Thanks and best wishes,
    Oliver

Lets see 2.5 months from spore germination to pins on agar.

About 2 weeks from casing to pins in a tray, then 2 more weeks until the mushrooms are mature.

The jar with the nice picture is the 2nd flush so its about 2 months after casing, but the jar is about a week behind the tray for some reason.

No special treatment was given to the spores. Simply streaking of dry spores on agar is all that was done.

Thanx, I'll get them on agar this evening.
Elektrolurch's label reads September 2001- holy shit, they are old.
I totally forgot about the print. The Zaps are a few months younger- March 2002. I'll give them a try asap. (too much stuff growing around here)

Additionally I place some spores on liquid ME(A), hope any Semp will grow.

I got a culture on agar from a different source and after a big growing breakdown I -just like WM - forgot about these beauties.
Keep your thumbs pressed (gibts das im Englischen?) and they will germinate just like WM's did. The print itself is really astonishing- very dark and with a thick layer of spores. It was that easy to get them on agar. I inoculated about 7 spots- hoping the best.
And the next days I'll let them Zapotecorum out on agar. This print looks smaller but also very dark & heavy.

Everytime I see the pictures of his old Shroomery threads I still can't believe that I am in posession of a print from those absolutely gorgeous beauties he grew. This goes for both- the Semps and the Zaps.

    BW,
    Oliver
