    Starting Woodlovers ~ P. cyanofriscosa

So, I have a p. cyanofriscosa lc that gets thicker by the hour it seems like. (loves the karo+wood) I was wondering if any of those who are working with it can recommend how to get a bed for them for them going the easiest. Specifically, can I just go to straight chips from the lc, or is it better to use grain spawn first?

I used some rectangular planters and some small flower pots, and I put in a mix of bleach-soaked alder chips with some of the soil that I had made up for my plants. (20/35/45 perlite/coir/castings)

I injected a total of 25cc's across 4 or 5 spots in the planters, and about 10cc's total in each of the flower pots. I also put some chips into a quart jar with a polyfil top and injected 10cc's into it.

I'd mix small woodchips and rice bran together and PC for an hour. Mycobags work well for this. The bran will be a booster for mycelium, and help colonization of the wood chips. If the chips aren't small enough, they won't colonize.

Here's a brief pictorial to demonstrate.

These are the best wood chips. The size is perfect for fast colonization.

    Mycelium booster

3 bags of chips, mixed with one bag of rice bran

    Pressure cook for 1 hour

Azure popcorn jars after 4 weeks. (started from spores) plant 1 jar per mycobag.

After the chips cool, dig a hole in the woodchips and plant the spawn jar in the center of the bag, cover and vacu-seal. I never mix the spawn and chips together. The mycelium will colonize faster if it's kept together, also known as the island effect.

Cyanofriscosa share the same fruiting conditions as Psilocybe cyanescens and azurescens.
They love that cool wet weather.

Well, I bet there is the reason shaking those jars have ruined/stalled them.

Once you got a colonized mycobag...it's a piece of cake from there.

Hmm...on the "island effect" does the whole spawn have to be kept intact, or just don't break it into individual kernels? Because what I was thinking of doing was shooting a popcorn spawnbag with the LC, then after it colonizes use a sterile knife and quarter it, then take those and put them in the bran/chips bags and continue from there. (mainly because I don't have any jars available atm)

Sure, you can use the colonized popcorn block as spawn. I literally dig a hole in the woodchips and plant the spawn, trying to keep it intact. If you want to add bran, you'll need to sterilize the woodchips. If you don't use bran, simply boiling the woodchips is good enough. The boiling process also fully hydrates the woodchips. TCO, I haven't tried oat bran yet, but wheat bran works really well too.

This substate also works well for edibles. These King Trumpets were grown on a similar substate. (but with red oak sawdust)

Thanks for mentioning all that WLJ. Especially the part about the KTO Oysters. I have a bunch of jars of trumpet spawn that I want to fruit out and the timing on this info could'nt be better.

I can see where the bags come in handy to keep the block in tact, that would be difficult in a jar. Those platic food containers i've seen in your past threads, are they PC'able ?

    thx

SWIM received some p. cyanofriscosa spores from Alan Rockefeller. She made a LC 3 days ago and has nice growth.

Has anyone had luck with cyanofriscosa?
I was thinking of trying it and it would be great to hear any feedback .

I was also wondering if anyone could make a small list about the woodlovers. They all look so simmilar but have a bit different growth/ fruiting conditions. Maybe some warmer species could be fruited indoors along with more popular species like cubensis? It would be nice to see and I might be the one to try it. Just need to gather some info... It shouldn't be that difficult anyway...

It's a wonderful species. Fast growing and vigorous. It's very potent and often larger than Ps. cyanescens. The species shares some exact same growth parameters as azures and cyans. There aren't many people who've worked with it, since it's relatively new and specificaly located in the San Francisco bay area. This thread has more photos and info.

Nice to know :]. Thx, waylit

Azures, Cyans, Friscos you're mine . Maybe I'll be able to save subareuginosa's spawn too... I'm so lucky I've found some huge patches of woodchuks in my neighbourhood, hehe.
