This is my first time ever growing so i do not really know much about growing mushrooms. Today, my cake is starting to pin up and I have to go away for the next couple days, does anyone know what to do? I am currently only growing 1 cake in a 1 gallon buket and it is perlite humidified. |

If you mist the walls of the bucket (take the cake out first then mist) and fan before you go..you should be ok for a few days.Ive left for a week and came back Everything was fine..I coulda been lucky though.

I would crack the lid on the top of the bucket so there is fresh air. I have also left a cake alone for 4 days without cracking the lid. Both worked, Cutty knows more than me.

I was gone for a three day vacation / trip this past weekend and noticed the shrooms from the cakes that were in my terrarrium looked deformed when I got back. I think that I have read that an overabundance of CO2 causes long stems and small deformed caps. Refrigeration is most likely what I will do next time. |

"im going to be gone for 10 days, should i just put all the incubating jars in the refridgerator?" I wouldn't unless you already see pins, otherwise it would take them more than ten days to finish colonizing and pin. What I love about vacation is that I grow invitro, about 20 halfpints at a time; you can leave for a week having nothing, come back in a week to an ounce harvest. Talk about neglect tek, right? As for you, my main noobie man, I would follow Hippie's advice and put it in the fridge, it will go suspended animation like Ripley in Aliens. You could leave it and I doubt it would finish fruiting before you got back, but you wouldn't be able to watch/fan it and baby it, so you may want to hold off (I remember when I had but one cake). |

So if someone had 4 or 5 casings all in various states of fruiting and that persone had to go out of town for a couple of weeks what advice would you give them concerning the casings. Put them in the fridge? Put them in the freezer? Toss them and start over? Other? Thanks all. |

assuming you have a way to resart things when you get back, spores, cultures or something..... harvest all you can before you go then cover everything and put it in the refrigerator hoping for the best. it might work for a while and if it doesnt then your not any farther in the hole than if you would have thrown it all away.

Dude, I put my fruiting invitro jars in the fridge for a week and when I came back, I took 'em out, let 'em mature and picked, they are still fruiting fine, no freezer, just the fridge. They won't grow much, if at all in the fridge, but you might do best to pick em clean before leaving, not too sure how long you're leaving or how long they could stay in the fridge. I'd suggest covering them so they don't dry out too much...

I am leaving town for 3 days with a load of pinning casings, but 3 days is ok when you have a fish tank air punp.... I have 3-4 jars of colonised popcorn in the fridge at any one time... That way, whenever I want to spawn some bulk or do a g2g I just get one of my strains out the fridge and use a bit, then save the rest for another day.. Its a great way to maximise growing potential... casings do fine in the fridge, but make sure they are in bags that will keep them clean... only a small air hole/filter patch is needed.. Over here in the UK the various companies that sell casings (called grow kits) keep them in fridges in the shop for up to weeks at a time

I'd just make sure you have a really clean fridge as well...lots of nasties in there...esp. hangin around for 2 weeks. If the person has time left, make some jars and when you come back...fresh spawn.. My friend was a happy camper after going away for christmas..
