my Foaf in deep space orbit sent my these pics. He says he "spawned" 2 qts of WBS to 1 qt of verm and cased in 1/4" verm. There have been some tiny fat pins for arround 4 or 5 days, and the number is rising but they arent getting much bigger. They are really fat and funny looking. Anyone know what could be causing this? is this what happens when you grow in no gravity?

Just keep fanning and misting of the sides of the tub or tetarrium a few times a day. Don't directly mist pins at that stage of growth. Misting pins direct at that stage could stunt or abort growth.

these were not misted after pins showed. They are in a greenhouse set up so they should be getting air.

i'm not sure, but they look pefectly normal to me. i've had many pins that look like that and grow into nice mushrooms fine. i do admit though, that spawning to vermiculite is a little odd. i would've added something nutritive to it, at least. |

this is based on highflyers rez effect post in archives. it sounded kinda funky to me too, but it also sounded easy and stuff. The pins do look pretty normal its just that they arent taking of like i usually see.

there isnt any condensation on the casing so i figure its not TOO high. it actually varies from arround 75-90. depending on when the humidifier is going off.

thanks cheffy. My foaf injected it with arround 100-150 ccs of water. Think that its 'too late' for these pins to mature? Maybe is hould dunk it, i mean its nothing but verm and WBS so it should hold water good...i mean its suposed to be rez effect lmao...

more water tomarrow via injection then more the day after that, get a pint or two in there, my tubs realy take alot of water, I mean alot. those pins might be ok , I wouldnt mess with them. I am assuming those are bus tub size casings, hard to tell by the pics.

no joyvy....if you look at the larger version of the picture...those are rye grains. Some of the grains in the second set of pics under the new pin are grains that are right up against the glass so the mycellium keeps getting banged into the glass when i pick itup....the "cake" of grains shrunk so much...there's now a 1/2" gap between the middle of the cake and the glass...at the top it's probably closer to a full inch....at the bottom...it's still regular size. Now for the question.....what to do with these? the grain that is...i was thinking of using it to spawn to some straw after i harvest the couple of mushies it has on it. |

I agree with TCO, dude. Clone that sucker and use it as a culture source. How long has it been since you inoculated that jar?

That's pretty old. No wonder its fruiting. My hat is off to you tho. That jar was definitely sterile! Musta had a high water content to slow it down that much and then fruit like that. When did the jar fill in? I would say let it finish invitro just to see how big they get. You can always clone it after harvest. I'd still clone it simply cuz it's one tuff son of b!!!

yeah...the jar was taking up space in my incubator and the other 4 qt's contammed with wet spot. These filled in in about 14 days and just sat there. Took them out and put them on my desk..kind of forgot about them. it's been cold in the house...it started to warm up the past week or so..today it's supposed to get up to 66oF a swing from a balmy 20 of last week. but i always keep it above 55 in the apartment. guess they liked the swing in temp. it's now got 4 little pins and the one big guy...which is growing real fast! if it keeps up this rate it will be hitting the top of the jar in a couple of days.

todays update. Well...since it's been on my desk it's getting some wacky light. Last night it started to switch direction. Here's an updated pic. I dumped the dried out lose grain. I noticed the newer pins are growing sideways....not up....odd... |

the big guy is being picked today...it fell over yesterday and opened up today. Question: Can i still take a print from this mushroom? The jar hasn't been opened at all...it's covered by double layer tyvek. As far as cloning...let me get this right....i'd crack open the cap and take a chunk with my sterile scalpel. dip it in peroxide (3%) for about 5 seconds...then agar or lc. right? Could i take a chunk from the stem? |
