BuckarooBanzai presents: Kind Granola (an edible marijuana recipe)

Okay, who out there also cooks with bud? Lemme hear ya say, "HELL YEAH!"

Edibles are a great thing, seriously. The high is long lasting and oh so pleasant…

If someone in your life is dealing with chronic pain, you should introduce them to edibles. Edibles, especially when made from Indica dominant plants, are fantastic for pain management. Dope treats can very often replace (or at least severely curtail the need for) opiates. Opiates are fun, don’t get me wrong, but lots of them on a regular basis is very hard on the body. Also, um, you may not have heard this, but they can be slightly addictive.

If you’ve never eaten bud and only smoked it, ya GOTTA try some edibles. How many times do you get to try marijuana in a new way??? If you are a regular consumer, just add my recipe to your rolodex and please: share yours! I would LOVE to see a bunch of tasty recipes added to this thread!

So, there are two very key things to consider when eating marijuana:
  1. THC is barely psychoactive right off the plant.
  2. THC is just barely water soluble.
Point one is critical. THC right off the plant will not get you high! The THC molecule (as harvested) is bound to a “carboxyl group” (COOH) and has a very low level of psycho activity. After THC is warmed (150F is sufficient), the carboxyl group breaks away and THC becomes drastically more active. When you toke, burning the leaf accomplishes this. With edibles, you must do this with an oven or microwave.

150 degrees F for 10-15 minutes is sufficient to free the carboxyl group (decarboxylate the THC). The actives in THC will boil off in the 250F to 400F range, so NEVER warm above 250F or you are loosing good stuff. Try to stay at or below 150, though, because you can boil off the essential oils that give the kind its lovely complex flavor.

Point two is also critical. THC is just barely water soluble. In bongs, this is a good thing, because you can bubble the smoke through water (to cool it) without loosing anything good in the water. As a sub note, this is why drinking bong water will make you vomit, but will not get you high.

In your stomach, a low solubility in water is very bad for things you want to get into your blood stream. Your stomach and GI tract are full of water. If the THC can’t dissolve into water, it can’t get into your system. THC doesn’t dissolve in water.

To get THC into your blood stream, where it can do some good, you need to first dissolve it into something that is easily absorbed by your GI tract. Edible oil is perfect for this. THC is highly soluble in most edible oils.

Butter and olive oil are both fantastic choices and easy to add to a billion different existing recipes!!!

SO, if you don’t like my recipe, just add the magic butter (or olive oil) to your own favorite tasty treat (or bread) and nosh heartily!

Ingredients:
  • 8 grams kind bud
  • 1 stick organic butter (NOT MARGARINE)
  • 1 capful organic vanilla in bourbon
  • 1 teaspoon dark maple sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1.5 cups of good granola (organic is king)
  • 3 big pieces wax paper
  • Pinch of nutmeg
Firstly, a word on ingredients: you can easily skimp on them, but God sakes, WHY? 8 grams of kind has a retail value of around $100 in most markets for a REASON. Part of that reason is the high – another part is that delicious smell/taste. You’ll get to experience a lot more of that smell/taste when eating buds. Don’t fuck that flavor up with shitty artificial vanilla and maple syrup!!! And yes, margarine will work, but again, WHY????

Secondly, you can do the “warming in oil” part in a big pan over super low heat, but a double boiler works much better and much more safely. There is no chance of loosing magic and almost no chance of loosing flavor in a double boiler.
  1. Remove all stems and seeds from your bud and chop it up as finely as possible. Drying the buds completely will make them easier to grind up into powder.
  2. Melt the butter in the double boiler.
  3. Add the powdered bud to the double boiler and heat for 30 minutes. Cover the double boiler if you can to preserve flavor. Stir at least once ever 10 minutes.
  4. Add the vanilla and maple syrup to the oil and stir well.
    Pour the granola into a large bowl. Add the nutmeg and sugar to the granola.
  5. Pour the oil mixture into the granola mixture and stir well. Use a spatula or your finger to get every last drop of oil. Each drop is precious with THC!
  6. Put the bowl in the freezer for 15 minutes to harden up a little.
    Scrape all the granola mixture onto wax paper (again, every little bit is precious now).
  7. Roll the wax paper up like a joint, compressing the granola mixture down into a tight cylinder. Use a new sheet of wax paper if it tears.
Put the tightly rolled cylinder in the fridge for 1 hour to harden completely. It will hold its shape easily if you wrap aluminum foil around the wax paper.

After your cylinder of delight is nice and hard, use a serrated knife to cut it up into eight “coins.” Cut each coin in half, toss in a big plastic bag and put back in the freezer. Keep them in the freezer or the treats will soften and break apart.

Test ˝ coin by eating it on an empty stomach and waiting a full four hours to see what happens. Eating too much marijuana will make you feel HORRIBLE – way worse than booze. Don’t eat too much!!!

As an end note, for those of you with vaporizers, the “skuff” (material left over after vaporizing) is still quite effective for cooking.

but i hear that thc will de-carboxyl-ate naturally over time even without added heat so while fresh green weed is virtually inactive orally
old dry weed is active.

I just learned so much that I did not know about mj. Awesome info here Buck.
I don't even smoke anymore but I am definitely goin to try this out.
just a couple questions:
1) does the high differ greatly in edibles over smoking(for some reason I don't enjoy the smoking anymore)
2)you say four hours, is that for the full effect to hit or just to start feeling it at all?( I understand most of us have different body chemistry and metabolism)
3) last but not least, is that Ky bourbon or can you buy any off brand bourbon(made in any state that claims to be bourbon) jk on that one

1> The edible high is a good bit different. Even with Sativa dominants, it is a good bit more "stoney" and a lot less "speedy." If that means anything to ya! But yeah, the buzz is notably different from smoking. I like to eat and smoke at the same time (preferably, the same bud).

2> Four hours will give you enough time to get up, stabilize and really feel what it will do to ya. Two is probably enough time to guage the intensity of the high AFTER you are farmiliar with what the high is. Just don't eat too much. It is a SHITTY feeling!!!

3> Any bourbon (let the people who make the vanilla extract decide). The best organic natural vanillas are extracted into bourbon, because it maintains the essential oil complexity the best. According to my wife, who bakes like a fiend, non-bourbon extracted vanillia is "piss - not even good enough for flavoring sugar cookies."

Interesting info there Buck...It sounds like your sayin that some of the oven baked goods which are normally heated to 350-425F are actually vapourizing the THC ...Iz zat so...?
How about efficiency wise compared to smoking ...Who would go through a bag faster - a muncher or a toker...?

There are lots of active cannabinoids that have been positively identified, over 60 I know of. Some vaporize at temperatures way below the classic THC vape temp. Your 350 degree oven isn’t killing very much 9-tetra-hydrocannabinol (one THC molecule), but the high is a LOT more than just 9-tetra-hydrocannabinol.

I tend to look at it this way: if the house fills with that lovely green smell, you are loosing some of the high.

Efficiency…that is a hard one, dude. Truth is, when you have edibles around, you tend to eat them kinda quick ‘cause they feel so damned good. Sorta like having “extra” narcotics. Will 20 pills automatically last twice as long as 10?

IF you were a person with restraint and self discipline, looking for a specific high and happy to maintain that until it faded before re-upping, I think edibles would last longer. Not being a person with restraint or self discipline, it is a hard question to answer!

If it helps you to know, when I only have a little, I always smoke. When I have plenty, I don’t always make a big batch of edibles.

Freaky – a Neil Diamond fan too, eh? Somehow “Forever in Blue Jeans” seems apropos…

i was unaware of possible loss of goodies from overheating.
we would usually just sautee the oil/goodies in a pan.
but this time we will use your double boiler method instead.

i usually go with some butter, or canola oil in some brownies.
and i was long overdue for some, until you reminded me

not quite, true it is not soluble in water
BUT
thc is one of the 'stickiest' substances known
and its' molecules will cling to anything it touches
including water
so some potency IS lost in any water pipe.
better to use dry chamber pipes for max potency.

I said "just barely water soluble." A very small amount will be lost on the first toke or two. After that, the water is totally saturated with what little THC it can pick up.

The amount lost really is quite miniscule. I would say you probably loose as much (or more) inside the workings of the pipe and your mouth/throat as the smoke is inhaled.

Ok ,here's another... How bout for lower quality shake..? can this method
consentrate the goods well enough without having to use an excessive amount of oils/butta...
Not a regular toker myself, but i'm inspired to try this as a "background" buzz.
Bout 35 years ago [ouch]..There was a fad going around where you put wine in yer bong...I think that really trapped the goods and soon fell out of favour...

..I was just thinking of making some 'space' butter yesterday,but I decided not to do it,because I always have alot of hallucinations with it !

...but now I read your post,I'm again thinking of doing it,..maybe I call my buddy and get some discarted plant materials and do some cooking..! lol

Shake and trim is PERFECT for cooking purposes! When cooking with leaf/trim you just have to be a little more careful of all the extra plant matter. All that hemp fiber can get chewy and give you gas.

The process with leaf/trim is basically the same. Start with ultra dry material, so it is easy to powder. Use a little more leaf than bud (10-15 gms) per stick of butter. Heat for 30-45 minutes in the double boiler and then filter the plant material out with a metal mesh colander.

Use the magic butter in whatever recipe you want. The leftover plant material will still have some magic and works well with chewy/gritty edibles (like the granola recipe above), ya just gotta eat more.

Leaf/trim edibles tend to have a higher concentration of CBDs which results in a more narcotic or “couchlock” type of high.

Don’t forget you can use olive or vegetable oil. You would be surprised how much olive oil you eat just in a vinaigrette on a good salad! And there are TONS of recipes which really pack in the oil without you even realizing it. An Alfredo sauce or a fudge recipe are excellent examples – both are easy to prepare and pack a boatload of oil to your tum-tum!

Just gimmie a hard baguette, some sea salt and a little balsamic vinegar on the side. I can consume (via dipping) 1/8 cup of olive oil in no time!

Golly, if you haven’t eaten herb before, I sure hope you try it. It really is a nice buzz and much longer lasting than smoking. You’ll still feel a good edible treat pretty strongly 6-8 hours later. It is also much easier to keep a little “chill pill” available for easy consumption at any time. “Why ya always got that little square of fudge in your tool bag?”

Eating kind of is and kind of isn't the same as smoking. Parts are different, parts are the same. I can't promise that if smoking annoys you then eating won't.

Just don’t eat too much! I can promise you won't like that! Spacecake isn’t kidding about hallucinations. Projectile vomiting and horrid drunk room spinning stuff will also happen to you. It feels like inhaling really hard on a cigar a few times. So nauseous you just FEEL green!

I don’t eat the edibles all the time, but I really like keeping them around (that is part of the reason for the freezer recipe – that recipe keeps forever). It is just such a nice high for certain things. A light edible buzz and some booze is about my favorite way to gear up for a really good meal out.

no bake edible for mexi-brick

I use to do this when smoking was out of the question and mexi-brick was plentiful. This doesen't work with fresh buds. Buy a pack of cream filled cupcakes. Remove the chocolate frosting top and finger out the cream filling. Fill the cavity with about 1.5-2 grams mexi-brick, replace the top and consume as needed. As memory recalls onset is about 2-3 hours with a 5-7 hour duration.
A FOAF also has a recipe for ginger snap cookies that are awesome! The storng flovor conseals any odor (great for road trips and general clansdestiny). I'll try to hunt down the recipe and post it soon.

Eating is the only way to roll its pleasant and comes in waves like a trip! When mother nature blessed us with cannabis i dont think smoking it was her plan. I just melt 5 grams of kind into the oil at low temp before making instant brownie mix(start with about 20-25% more oil than recipe requires) once the weed is brown strain it and toss the plant matter then bake as normal. A 2" by 2" brownie will do the job nicely! As far as losing some cannabiniods it is my opinion that you lose the ones that cloud the high and retain the desired ones that give a clear an clean feeling.This is what i like Dont mess with stress get the good stuff. You cant beat the high grade sativa for clarity. Indica will make you more tired IMHO. The only time I have ever had major realizations of self on MJ was when i smoked a rediculous amount of hash or when i ate it. Happy trails.

Great thread...

I've been thinking about asking the community about eating reefer, but clearly hadn't gotten around to it.. I really have to try this, as I've always enjoyed eating brownies in the past (except for one overly-large brownie given to me by a comedian [and actual comedian, not just a funny guy]) and smoking often gets me too woozy feeling....

Much, MUCH better to sneak up on your high.

Eating too much dope feels really, really SHITTY. Just nauseous and gross and icky.

But it is a nice narcoticky kinda thing otherwise. Very pleasant. I hope ya try it, I bet ya'll like it!

the taste was to me a lot like the way the bud smelled, with some sweetness..mmmmm

In mid conversation I feel that I'm talking' 90mph and realize I feel the magic

I'm driven home cause I gotta work the next day
and realized this is a very nice buzz indeed.
No way for me to really put into words or compare to anything that I can think of.
But I was relaxed, happy, and very comfortable. I got home and had to go straight to bed.(because the work thing )(wish I could've stayed up a few more hours)
I definitely will be eating some more(still have some left. I only ate the suggested dose..) but I think for me I could eat twice that amount and be great. There was no gut discomfort, no negatives at all except the fact I was REALLY sleepy. But hey, I'm usually long asleep by 23:30 at the latest so that could have been part of the reason for that.

I will be making more of this for sure. Its great for you guys that don't like smoking too.
Totally different IMO. But I think you can still tell a little that the high is from thc. weird.

So Buck said for other peeps to post recipes!

What about the Fire Cracker recipe where it says
to cook at 325F for 25 minutes. Thats the way I've
been doing it and it does work but not all that strong
but yet enjoyable. What temp and time would do BB.

Well, it isn't a recipie of yours Buck..,but you inspired me to give cakes another try !

So..here it is a 750 grams cake ,..good for at least 40 people lol ! (it was a little bit to strong to say te least..overdosed again)
I'm gonne give it to a friend that gave me the weed for it...

Ok, I inquired about FOAF's cookies. He just makes up a batch of gingersnaps and before he bakes them sprinkles pure keif on the top then bake as directed. Gotta say they are the bomb!!

you guys made me hungry. lol

these were made with a half oz. of some excellent midgrade bud using hacksaws canna-butter tek.

after you have the butter just use the recipe on the side of the rice crispys brand cereal box.

over medium heat melt 1/4 cup of butter(i used 1/2 cup butter) and 10oz of large marshmellows(about 40). once its liquified pour the mix over 6 cups of rice crispys and stir. next scoop it into a greased pan, mash it down and chill for around 5 min. this can all be done in less than 10 min.

butter without all the chlorophyll

So my brother just gave me the book 'marijuana cooking good medicine made easy' and there are four butter/oil extraction recipies and a bunch of ways to use it. But I found the one i'm about to share unique. First use one pound butter per ounce of cannabis. Simmer the cannabis in water for an hour. Then add the butter and simmer for another hour stiring occionally. Let cool and then simmer again for an hour; repeat this twice. After the last heating use cheesecloth or the like to strain the plant material from the water/butter. Pour 1-2 cups boiling water over the strained cannabis, squeeze out any remaining liquid and discard cannabis. Then refrigerate the liquid for 24 hours. The butter will solidify on top of the water. Now you can seperate the butter from the water and pat dry with a paper towel. If you desire you can remelt the butter and put it in containers of your chose for later use. The end product is a very light green butter.

The boil in water method works, but it is really messy and kind of gross. The double boiler method is a lot cleaner and easier.

Rice Krispy treats are a good way to go, because you don't have to heat them again after you add the magic butter.

I like to always keep the heat below 250, so that kind of leaves most of the classic baking recipes out.

Spacecake - dude - TOO MUCH! More than about 4 grams of kind bud and I'm puking my guts out with the room spinning around my head. That cake would fry a whole bar!

I like the water method of making cannibutter, espically for shwag.
It removes the cholorophyl and some of the plant wax while leaving the goodies and essential oils. Creating a better flavor imho.

I just boil my water add butter and turn it down to a simmer and wait for it to melt then add my herb. simmer a while then straight to the fridge untill the butter hardens. Most of the plant matter decants down into the water
and I just loosten the butter slab floating on top of the water pull it out and enjoy.

I sometimes clarify the butter first (ghee).

You can re melt the butter to strain but I never felt it necessary for brownies and such. I do it only if I make something light, like with a nice simple (buttery) sugar cookie recipe..

Way stupid more potent, but not as flavorful, because you don't get a lot of the essential oils and terpenes that are in the plant material. Kinda like the difference between smoking hash and smoking bud.

Be careful eating hash/kief, you can get way too much way too quick. Also, it tends to have a very strong flavor that some folks find distateful.

I'd probably save my hash and kief for smoking...unless ya have a whole bunch (or the smoke irritates your throat).

i just finished the last of my granola last night.
next time i would cut it down to a half stick of butter or maybe try something like apple sauce instead ( butter taste was to overpowering )
i found that if you sprinkle cinnamon sugar on it and nuke for 30 secs
it tastes better and hits you much faster.
