The Known Active and Non-Active Species of Panaeolus

These lists and drawings are drawn from the published works of Guzmán, Allen and Gartz, and Ewald Gerhardt.

Here is the latest up-to-date listing of the active known species of Panaeolus.

There are now recognized only 12 species in the genera of Panaeolus of which 7 are known to be psychoactive and contain the alkaloids, psilocine and/or psilocybine and other related tryptamine compounds.

After enlarging the thumbnails, right click on the mouse on the bottom right corner of the enlarged image to make it larger so as to read the text. The names of the 12 species are on the bottom of each page and remember that panaeolus subbalteatus is now called Panaeolus cinctulus

    Active Species of Panaeolus

    Panaeolus africanus Ola'h

Panaeolus castaneifolius (Murrill) A.H. Sm. (= ? P. olivaceus F. H. Møller; Panaeolina castaneifolia (Murrill) Bon; P. castaneifolia (Murrill) Ew. Gerhardt, this latest seems the true name, see Gerhardt, 1996)

    Panaeolus microsporus Ola'h & Cailleux

Panaeolus olivaceus F.H. Møller (it is sometimes confused as a synonym of P. castaneifolius, see that)

Panaeolus papilionaceus (Fr.) Quél. var. papilionaceus sensu auct. non s. Ew. Gerhardt [= P. campanulatus (L. : Fr.) Quél.]

    Panaeolus retirugis (Fr.) Quél.

Panaeolus subbalteatus (Berk. & Broome) Sacc. (= P. venenosus Murrill) [Now known as Panaeolus cinctulus]

And here in a photo essay, are the sketches of the known species of Panaeolus to be used as a guide in their identification. The sketches are from Ewald Gerhardt's monograph on Panaeolus published in German.

Is (at least) one of the illustrations in this series missing from what you posted?
