![]() | U-POL panel wipe naptha in UK
Hey guys, SWIM recently bought a 1L can of U-POL panel wipe (slow)/degreaser because the MSDS says it's naptha: "LOW BOILING POINT HYDROGEN TREATED NAPHTHA - NAPHTHA (PETROLEUM), HYDRODESULPHURIZED HEAVY >90%" (MSDS) But on the can it says "contains xylene, mixture of isomers/mixture of solvents". Does anyone else have any experience with U-POL panel wipe naptha in the UK? thanks |

The MSDS that came up on Google says that it's miscible with water, so I'd watch out - it may not separate from the aqueous phase.. Other than that, I'd say just check to see if it evaps clean. The xylene portion tells me that it will be pulling a broad spectrum of alks and oils and that it probably won't freeze precip for shit, so you'll need something a bit more selective if you want clean crystals. Start with a small amount of bark (guessing that one is working with MHRB), evap and post the results. We can all go from there. |

What SWIM was thinking is that SWIM could use this to extract the bulk, then buy something like colemans fuel to purify it further (as this is much cheaper than colemans).

If you can get Coleman's fuel (WITHOUT rust inhibitor) I'd just use that and fuck the cost. If this stuff is miscable in water, you stand a good chance of the alks getting lost in a soapy emulsion that will never separate. Make up a solution of basified water and see how well the U-POL mixes in with it. If you can't get the majority of the U-POL back out of the water, it's no good. If it works out, your idea of pulling everything with U-POL and cleaning it up with a more selective solvent is sound. Heptane is what you want to look for in that case.

After discussions with U-Pol, SWIM knows that U-Pol is naptha, and that the MSDS is wrong. SWIM evapped about 150ml of U-Pol and got a virtually clean evap (there was a few tiny little stains, but it was trace) So, this looks like a good source in the UK for naptha |
