I was in Australia on vacation this summer. One of my favorite activities when i'm traveling is to go to the market and compare the little (or big) differences between food abroad and food at home (USA). There was a great organic farmer's type of market just down the street from where i was staying where i often found wild collected mushrooms. Also, they have very different generic flavors than we do. In the US, the most common generic soda flavors are lemon/lime, orange and grape. In Oz i couldn't find a grape or orange soda to save my life and the only lemon/lime i saw was sprite. Pineapple and passion fruit seem to be their most popular generic flavors, but lemon soda is king of the name brands.

One of my favorite sodas of all time is called Cactus cooler which is an orange and pineapple flavor. It only seems to be sold in the southwest though, i can almost never find it. I wish i'd tried the pineapple crush now, lol.

Yay 2000!!!! ![]() This is the second time though! ![]() I really wish i'd tried those slippery jacks, but they were always kind of old and leathery looking. How do you cook them, hyph? There were some other mushrooms in the market but i forgot to take my camera with me a lot. I think i have some pics from last year's trip of some growing in the wild too, have to look for those. Australia is a great place to visit! And live for that matter. The produce, meat and eggs are unbelievable. It made me realize how over hormone and chemical laden everything here really is unless you buy organic. The people are laid back and friendly, the cities are clean and metropolitan. Definitely get yourself down under at least once! I wonder if they have cactus cooler?

I found they give me the runs unless I wipe the slippery off. Use them like porcini. I have a lot of them dried and they make great mushroom stock. I spent a month in Aus in 1980. The seafood was incredible. The wine industry was just getting started - I got bottles of wine in restaurants for about $2-3.

Heh, i've always poo poo'd australian tables wines (props if anyone knows where that quote is from ) and that opinion was actually enforced on my first trip there because my older relatives have horrible taste in wine. My brother and i actually snuck into the kitchen a couple of times and poured out our glasses. However, this last trip i went wine tasting with a foodie who took us to some really good wineries and i actually brought a couple of bottles back to the states. We were in the Yarra Valley region and the wines there tend to be very earthy with a lot of licoricey, peppery tones. Good for some things, shitty for pinot noir which is my fav of the moment.
