Hello, we are french students in a biology university. We've got a project on bioluminescent mushroom. We went on this forum because we saw a post about Panellus Stipticus growth. Is this mushroom the most bioluminescent we can buy on internet and does it grow easily? We've never grow mushrooms and we only got a few months (about 4) to do it... Are Armillaria and Omphalotus best suited for that experiments? Does anybody ever see one of these and do they grow easier and quicker than Panellus? We need your help, please. Thanks ! |

Panellus stipticus is a good choice The mycelium runs fairly rapidly and glows throughout the entire life cycle from agar plates to final fruiting substrate. The fungus will fruit invitro making it an ideal choice for a classroom setting. http://forums.mycotopia.net/attachme...0-2-2008-3.jpg

thanks all for your answers! ![]() sukerfree --> we 'd like to find these mushrooms, one can be see 40 meters away, but unfortunatly no place yet available to buy it! Myc --> how much does Panellus glow? I've read the light was enough to light a book, is it true? because we've got to find a appropriate stuff to analyse this light, and may be good to know the intensity. Do you know how much time is Panellus life cycle? And, 've got many questions , how much agar plates could be done with a bag like this http://sporeworks.com/store/product.php?productid=16343 ?thanks again! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I don't know about Omphalotus, but Armillaria mellea (like most Armillaria species) is a parasitic fungi so I'd only use it for controlled indoor experiments, and even then I'd rather use a benign alternative. It can potentially wipe out a forest. Apparently it's quite tasty though, and is commonly called the honey mushroom. Quote:

The fungi can be seen from a distance but your eyes must adjust first. Efforts at photography are detailed here: http://forums.mycotopia.net/exotic-m...ent-fungi.html (Panellus Stipticus - bioluminescent fungi) Throughout the thread, I try several cameras and film Toward the end of the thread I was able to accomplish my goals with opening the camera aperture to maximum Then the shutter was held open manually for extended periods of time. In other words, there is recordable light being emitted by the fungus. However, they don't work like a portable lantern so to speak. I kept them in my bedroom at night. After my eyes were fully adjusted, I could easily see light being cast from the colonized woodblocks onto a nearby wall. They worked perfectly as a night light - not enough illumination to keep one awake but just enough to see.
