Holland is world-renowned as a bicylist-friendly country A great number of the population speak English The entire country has a separate, dedicated, pathway system (much like the highway system in the USA) dedicated solely to bicycle and small motor vehicle traffic. As this system crosses and interacts with the major highway system and pedestrian pathways, there is a clever system of regulation. Bicycles have the right-of-way a great deal of the time. These "rules" of the road are very carefully taught and respected. As a tourist, I found myself in violation of these rules from time to time (how embarassing). The country uses a great deal of wind-generated power Shipping (by sea and waterways) is HUGE over there - never seen such large aquatic vessels in my life. Cheese rules - if you go over there, you'll see what I mean! An automobile would be a real albatross in Holland - no place to park (or very rarely) Get a train pass to go from town to town Rent a bicycle (or bring one as I did) to ride out of major cities to neighboring villages.
