i cant seem to find any good advice about bulk casing rye. i plan to use horse compost from sporeworks with 3lb rye bags. i dont have much money for building terreriums either. what should i case them in that would be easy to care for, and how much rye/compost should i use per casing? is there any special care needed for bulk caisngs? sorry for all the newb questions but i would really appreciate your guys' help. thx |

S'not too tough to get started. Here's a link to "Casings" in the old archive: Casings --- A very common casing mix is 60% Vermiculite, 40% Coco Coir, and a splash of Calcium Carbonate. Coir and CC are both found in pet stores. --- and even if you can't afford a complex fruiting chamber, you still have good options. For growing bulk you might want to try the Monotub. Here's a good design: Faht's Mo' Tubs --- Still too complex? Just get a rubbermaid tub, mix your stuph together and fan three or four times a day. |

Im sure there is something in the archives for sure about this. But I have never been good at figuring out ratios. I know someone that uses a reg. size pillow case of bulk to 5 quarts spawn ( has used as little as 3). Mix in a large sterilite tub. Keep tub in a room at mid 80 till colonized. Fan 3 times a day with the lid or a piece of cardboard when you are ready to initiate pinning..oh and drop the temp to mid 70s. Just using the termostat in your house. Keep in a closet or something where the temps are more steady. That is probably the simplest way. Condensation should be on the sides of the tub, but water should not pour off the lid when you open it. If this happens just fan it more. Last edited by entheogenisis; 02-20-07 at 07:20. Casing tek here... http://archives.mycotopia.net/discus...tml?1005203075 and here http://archives.mycotopia.net/discus...tml?1146752898 Casing care here... http://archives.mycotopia.net/discus...tml?1079884166 You said you were going to use horse shit for the substrate. Pasteurize the horse shit at 170 deg F for about an hour (little more) let it drain and cool. WHen it cools use your colonized rye grain to spawn the horse manure. Ratio of rye spawn to substrate should be around 1:4. this is a little high but it will get the job done quicker. Let it colonize completely (about 10-14 days) then case it the same way as the above links describe. You can use a clear rubbermaid to fruit it in. |

For a first bulk project, I wouldn't case. Cubies pin great uncased. This might help: http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=14996 (B+ bulk in a box (mondo low tech))
