![]() | Why is h/poo more beneficial then cow manure? What is it exactly that makes horse manure better than cow manure for mushroom cultivation? Can one have good results using cow manure apposed to horse manure? Also, my friend found a horse stable that is willing to allow him to take horse manure when ever he wants. The only problem is, the horse manure has tons of wood chips in it. I have read conflicting information on whether it is safe to use horse manure with wood chips or not. Some posts/articles say it will cause contamination and others say that it's not a big deal. What is your opinions on the subject? Thanks, res |

![]() | cow works fine, it's just a bit richer than horse, denser. but plenty use it. you can have some wood but it's best to pick it out as you shred the poo for use, a pain in the ass but lowers contam losses.

![]() | cow poo When I use cow poo I add more straw than with horse poo, makes up for the "more fibers". I also look for fully dried cow chips that have weathered and have leeched out alot of there nutrients, grass is growing out of them and they are really dry and light, no smell present. There's quite alot of different textures from cow to cow, depends on the health of the animal. Horse poo desentigrates after a rain or two and the horses have a habit of eating it on occasion. Also, you have to consider the soarce of the poo. Around here animals are all pastured and have basically the same diet. Besides texture issues, there's not much difference in the performance. This goes for hose, cow, buffalo, donkey, and llama; all within one mile of me, yes I'm blessed. Haven't tried the elk yet. If I had to rely on bagged commercial manures I believe it would vary greatly, the closer to the city the more confinement operations operate. These animals have a completely different diet from one another. If you can't hand pick your own poo, buy it from a soarce like Hippy that will hand pick it for you. Sounds funny but you know what i mean.

![]() | lol.. Well the plan was to buy a bag of cow manure from Home Depot. Would that not be a good idea? I think it may be best to just get the h/poo from the stable and pick out the wood chips. It is going to be a little while before the spawn is ready; so the h/poo has some time to sit out in the weather for a while anyways. |

![]() | the horse gathered would undoubtedly be greatly superior to store bought bagged manure.

![]() | Actualy I think horse poo is a better performer simply because of the dietary diffrences . Cows dont get grain feed and typicaly dont get hayed all that much past spring once the grass comes up. So they get fewer of what we consider good nutrirnts for the fungus. Tried growing in grass clipings lately ? I havent... But hey and grains? you betch ya Horses on the onther hand are grained and heyed daily regarless of the time of year. Horse poo is droped as apples, as there called, rather than steamy slimy pools of crap. Less water less acid more solid nutrients compared to cow manure. You want horse dung ? Just ask ive got a private supply right out back.. I imagine we could trade something.. I just seeded the back yard yesterday. Ive got a few big piles, like 10 cubic foot piles a few smaller piles set aside under some low lying pine and a pile or two set into the moss that grows around here. Its allways damp to the touch kinda like a permanent maintence free casing ![]() Mind you I didnt pasturize or anything just simmply crushed up a few cakes into diffrnt areas. I looked realy close for any other mycelium that would be competition and found non. Hell was just a week ago we got a foot of snow now were in the 80 degree range. Its all a crap shoot per say...... Pardon the pun ![]()

![]() | The stables near me never really know if the horses been recently wormed due to that mostly this is done seperately by the owner, not by the stable. So How concerned should one be of the medicines in the poo...........? |
