Coffee grinds in BRF mix

I use coffee grinds when making substrate to be spawn to, but for regular BRF, could some coffee grinds and lime be added to help in colonization?

Probably wouldn't help. The reason, brf is a spawn material and highly nutritious, like grains. Coffee grinds are more of a bulk substrate ingredient and not as nutritious. You might try just a few, but I wouldn't use much.

Then again, those coffee grinds/verm 1/2 pints I did performed almost as well as a pf cake.

I have done experiments using spent coffee grinds in half pint brf jars. I found negligible differences between controls and additions of 5, 10, 15 and 30 ml. Since these were multispore inoculations with only 2 replications, there is not much confidence in the results. However, I do feel that 5-10ml/jar, or approximately a teaspoon does help increase colonization time, and possibly in fruiting as well. The most noticeable effect is that the coffee seems to promote more rhizomorphic growth of the mycelium. That, and it helps make germination more visible in the early stages as the substrate is much darker. I also added a pinch of worm castings to brf jars along with coffee. Both of these ingredients also go into my bulk substrate/compost mixes with good results, and I think it helps to have the mycelium munching on them from day 1. I recently posted a pic in another related thread showing brf jars with and without coffee, if you're interested.

if you decide to try it out, could you possibly do a few jars without it so we can see the comarison. obviously unless its agared it wont be a totally level playing field but it may give us an idea if it is drastically better.

i doubt the benefit, if any, is noticable
the worm castings mentioned do help
but only in small amounts, a tablespoon or two at most
i'd be most concerned about coffee's ph
and the lime too, cakes are neutral
might be good to mix the lime with the coffee
before adding that mix to your cakes
to ensure the lime's in the right spot to
do the intended job.
