baby bottle sterilizer

I got myself a baby bottle steam sterilizer because I have a baby on the way. I was wondering, though, if the 8 min cycle would be sufficient for sterilizing tools and/or casing materials.

steam can work nicely
but i think i'd cycle that longer than just 8 minutes,
proly 4-5 cycles should do it

yeah, I thought that might be too short. I will proly stick with boiling for tools, and the microwave for casing material since the times are shorter.

This brings up a good point, I use the microwave to nuke coir/verm casings but can it be used for peat/verm as well. The other thing is I know pasteurizing temp is around 140-160, but doesnt the microwave get the material alot hotter than that, thus, destroying the nutes?

You don't want nutrients in a casing layer and heat isn't going to destroy nutrients.

very little nutrients
in peat or verm,
a bit more in coir but still not much
so any loss is neglible

i never recommend microwaves
but some do.
verm can contain metallic impurities,
causing the peat/coir to catch fire
inside the unit,
a serious potential hazard.

I put verm on a paper towel and let it go about 3.5 mins, more than that and the paper starts to burn.

Thats good info. I would have never thought about possible metaillics in the verm. Now I notice it almost resembles fools gold.
