    Liberty Caps

    Greetings:

I came upon this by accident while looking up liberty caps. Maybe this is old news to some of you. Take a look at these coins from the 1700's and see if you see something familiar in them.

Now I know, I know... its not a mushroom ... but its cool imagery.

I had no idea that there was a (possible) direct connection between the name of the mushroom and the coin. Funny, eh !

I think the mushrooms are named for the caps- the ones shown in the pics. I don't think the coins depict mushrooms.

I could be wrong, I guess.

I was more eluding to the fact that its a cosmic coincidence that the hat like thing on the stick looks like a semi and somehow the mushroom got named the same as the coin...

P.S: half-cent don't buy much anymore. Wonder what one these babies is worth today?

One of the first hats to be depicted was found in a tomb painting at Thebes and shows a man wearing a coolie-style straw hat. Other early hats include the Pileus, which was a simple skull cap, the Phrygian cap, which became identified later as the 'liberty cap' given to slaves in Greece and Rome when they were made free men, and the Pestasos which comes from ancient Greece and is the first known hat with a brim.

Semilanceata is from latin and means "semi - lanceaolate". It's from the spear-like shape of the hat.
