Probably better to use it. But it might work. Can't get dextrose at all? They sell tablets of it at Walgreens. Or swipe a couple of packs of "Sugar in the Raw" from Starbucks, and try that maybe. If it works without, let us all know! |

Malt is available at any beer/wine making shop, just use the light tan malt, labled as such. I read on here where someone was using light karo syrup instead of malt and it was working. They said it made nice clear plates. I don't know the ratio, but I'm sure someone will help you out.

You can really use just about anything. But simple sugars like dextrose are easy to work with. Dextrose, which is usually derived from corn, is not much different from corn syrup. I have done plates with rice syrup (makes the plates a tint yellow), xylitol, agave, compost juice etc. Just about anything can be made as "food", stamets even talks about making dog food agar media. It is nice to have a variety of plates, with different nutrients, that way, as you transfer a culture several times, you can avoid senescence, and genetic degradation. Good luck finding what you need. Check a good healthfood store if you haven't, or a brewery supply, even a micro brewery in yer area may be able to give you a hand. >Yer friend, NascAR denDriTE DUDley |

Peptone is a difficult thing to find. But you can also use a grain flour as the nitrogen source. Rye flour and rice flour have both done well for me. About 2 grams per 500ml The nitrogen source isn't really for storage tbe, it's to help the myc run faster on the agar, or whatever sub you're using. The Nut yeast as Hip said is also an awesome additive. I use about 3 gramsms per 500 ml of agar
