    Question Wood lovers on agar

It's coming on time to start the wood lovers for next spring. I got thinking about how to go about it and started to wonder how to go about doing some isolates on agar.

My question is, should I go for just one isolate, or should I go for several and mix them to make the spawn?

The reasoning is that a strain that does well on agar won't necessarily do well in the wild. If several healthy looking strains are used, there's a better chance that one or more will really take off.

I'm also planning to brew up agar with and without "woody juice." Like Waylit's LC for wood lovers, use some soak water from wood chips to make the agar.

    Thoughts?

yeah, not a bad idea going with several isolates. it's tough to get woodlovers to pin on agar so it is even tougher to prove it is a good isolate.

i am starting mine soon too.. azures, cyans and arcana!

this will be a great thread to keep an eye on. thanks!

I have azures and cyans, too. Also have what we're pretty sure are pan sub prints to clean up, but that's another kettle of fish. Gotta do some research on those.

After the new year I'll break out the glove box. There's not much room around here for 'secret' projects, with curious grandkids and all, but where there's a will there's a way!

    Hopefully a pertinant question

What agar formula to you guys use to culture woodlovers?
    (e.g. MEA, PDA, etc...)

I get that you're using "wood tea" to prepare it, I'm just curious about the powdered formula.

    Thanks

oh! and i forgot the pouch fungi !!!

MEA or PDA will work.. but they seem to like MEA a little better imo.

I plan on MEA. I have a bit of gentamycin I may throw into the brew, 'cause the pan subs are definitely not sterile will be started on the same brew.

It's only my third time with agar (mixed results before) and second with woodies. Next summer will tell us about those, but the bag of colonized chips looked good when they were layed out.

I'm tickled to have good folks on the journey with me. I'm not sure when the party will start here, but it won't be too long.
